the well known clutch problem here with my 07 G650X Challenge. I've opened the clutch cover yesterday because suddenly I've lost completely the clutch action. Result: lost 1 tooth from operating shaft (that goes on the cover) and 1 tooth from the release bearing. The lost tooth from the cover shaft I was able recover, but I couldn't find the lost tooth from the release bearing (picture below).
Do you guys think this lost tooth is a problem for the engine? I'm going to do an oil change before starting the engine again but I'm not sure I will find this small piece of metal in it.
Is this broken teeth caused by the well known cover defect? Should I replace the cover for the '09?
I would get the new cover if you don't have access to a machine shop or a buddy that will cut you a deal doing it for you.
I don't recall if the missing tooth is magnetic or not, but as long as you have the side of the motor open, I would stick my magnetic pick up tool in there and see what comes out just to be safe.
Thing is, that tooth might be picked up by oil being flung around and could do all sorts of damage.
I've just split a casing of a KTM 640 where one of the plastic oil gears was broken and it was everywhere (in bearings and oil channels)
A steel tooth might be picked up with a magnet as Tbarstow says.
My X is at 24,000 miles. Do I spend the $36 for the valve cover/ cylinder cover gasket or reuse the existing one?

That looks awesome! Curious though, having read the thread you referenced I couldn't quite piece together what was included with the kit. Is it a complete turnkey, plug and play kit? Instrument cluster housing with ignition, tower, lighting, wiring kit/adapters, HDB top clamp, screen...etc. It sounded like the instrument panel mount was still separately sourced, but has that changed? Looking for something like this or the Lynx (but would rather have the LED setup :))

That bike is barely broken in, spend away on it. They don't make any bikes that are comparable any more. Especially w/o electric nanny stuff. The only thing possibly coming our way
is the AJP PR7 or the CCM 450. I plan on keeping mine along time. BMW is good about spares.

Are you going to run the loom down there? I assume that's what those two holes on the back are for. How are you making sure it's water tight?
It should be water tight. I think i'm going to stick the battery there to get that weight down low.
I'd fit a drain bolt if you plan on any water crossings as my tool box used to fill with water all the time and rusted all my tools

I was going to do the same battery placement but the earthx is so light I just stored all tools and flat repair stuff down there (heavier than battery) and kept the battery in its original spot. Agree with Kito, The toolbox isn't quite watertight.
Regular lead acid battery? I only ask because I thought about that after reading colebatch's thread and then decided on keeping tools down there once I bought a LiFePo battery (so I could leave it outside in NYC winter and not worry about it discharging - so far so good) and I think they're actually heavier than the battery. Although there's no reason you couldn't surround it with foam and then put tools around it I suppose.
FWIW, I've had the opposite experience. No matter how much water I go through the stuff in the toolbox remains dry. I'd certainly test before trusting though.
I'll just fit it and keep my tools in there for now so I can see if it really is water tight.

FWIW, I've got my clutch cover off for that same upgrade; just tried a magnet against both the the rack and pinion gears; it appears they are both magnetic.
Agreed, seems like a lot of work and headache with potential flooding issues for something solved by LiFePo battery. I'm waiting for my battery to kick it to make the switch to LiFePo..

What are you guys running in place of the oem tail that DOES NOT GET SUCKED IN BY THE REAR TIRE on reasonable jumps like 2 ft drop offs?
It happened with the air shock and now again with a well set up Hyperpro so I have to assume just bad design. Im only 185 with gear and no other load on bike so this seems ridiculous.
Best tail bracket/plate holder/ turn signal holder option please? Almost willing to go oem if thats the ticket to alleviate this issue.
This bike really could be my "if I could only have one bike" bike. Im that close!
I would think that Snooker's FARFS mod would do it for you. Makes the stock rear pretty rigid for me.
