BMW R100GS Aftermarket Sidestand

    Howdy. Has anyone been able to locate a superior alternative to the stock R100GS sidestand. Browns won't work. This topic has come up numerous times. Apparently some have been able to fabricate a good replacement and there has been some discussion regarding someone fabricating a batch of them as it's apparent the demand is there.     Has anybody out there bought this one and, if so, please give me your opinion on this stand. They are pricey (roughly $230 or so including shipping) so I would really need some input prior to getting one.

    My bike leans way over (even with with about a 3/4" extension plate under the foot) and is not confidence inspiring, especially when fully loaded. I'm assuming it's bent and the mounting attachment/crashbar is bent/worn/stressed as well. I love the Browns stand on my /6 and am not concerned about the ability of the sidestand to auto-retract or not - I just want a decent alternative to the stock setup.

    Any tips, input on the Boxxerparts stand, advice, etc. would be appreciated. As mentioned, an ADV search shows that the stock stand is unsatisfactory for many folks but I've not been able to find a solution. Thanks

    why not just a get a new OEM sidestand or sidestand and crashbar?

    Call the Grand Rapids, MI BMW dealer and see if they have a Farley stand for R100GS. I would suspect they do. You can search Farley sidestand for more information.

    Didn't come up with much on a Google search of Farley sidestand. Replacing the OEM setup would cost about $400 (bar, stand, misc. hardware) if I were to get everything. Even if I did replace with OEM I'd still be unhappy with the stock setup (as apparently many folks are), especially after dropping the bike a few more times (as I have in the past) and probably bending/tweaking the setup again.

    Migsel answered my e-mail promptly and indicated that the stand, shipped, would cost $320.00. It sounds like what I want and need but unfortunately the price is too steep for me at this time (No job) so I'm still looking for a cheaper alternative. The Boxxerworks stand is about the same price. The excellent Browns sidestands, which fit just about all airheads but the GS's, run about $140.00 new. It seems like there must be a cheaper alternative out there somewhere but maybe not. Anyone know of a fabricator who's building/retrofitting and sidestands? Any other ideas? Thanks

    In my case the protection bar which the sidestand is partially mounted to has been bent and pulled back numerous times. In addition I beleive the sidestand itself is slightly bent and the open stops of the stand have appreciable wear/distress. The end result is that the bike leans waaaay over when resting on the sidestand - not a confidence inspiring sight when the bike is fully loaded for a trip. This lean is with shim plates attached to the bottom of the stand foot. I installed a Browns on my R75/6 about 5 years ago and feel that it's the best convenience enhancement I've made even though the stock sidestand worked just fine. Lots of Browns have been and are still being sold.
    A frame/engine bolt mounted sidestand for the GS makes it easier to deploy the sidestand and would make the bike more stable when parked, and lastly, would do away with concerns with being able to use the sidestand after dumping the bike and bending the left side protection bars while out on a trip. I've heard more than once of cases where the sidestand broke due to excessive lean on a loaded bike.
    Those are my reasons for wanting an aftermarket stand. Some other folks don't like the stock sidestand because of the self-retracting feature (there are ways to negate this feature but I haven't because I like it and the likelehood of forgetting to retract it is good because once deployed it's more or less hidden by the cylinder and head). Other's don't like the stock stand because for whatever reason (shorter legs, poor flexibility, etc.) they find it difficult to deploy the stand properly (this may be especially true and inadvisable when needing to park the bike where the ground slopes downhill on the left side - however slightly).. Some have gone so far as to rig up a pulley system to extend the stand.

    Anyway, with the Browns stand it's convenient, visible when deployed, you can hear it snap open, it's located more centrally on the bike (no reach involved, better fore/aft weight balance, especially when the bags are loaded. etc. ) and is worth every penny. Just wish they made one for the R100GS.

    I can't tell from the picture, but is how is that stand fastened to the bike? Like the OEM one, welded to frame, or bolted to something? Looks stout but on my laptop monitor I can't see much.

    +1 here - more pics and link please. I "fixed" my abused left crash bar, and have a new one on the shelf, but would rather use my old one as long as possible. Same problem here - leans way over especially when loaded. I'm looking into fabbing one out of tubing, but maybe I need to look into more fixing of the crash bar for better alignment. I'd love to see what others have to mount to the frame.

    Here's Alistair's sidestand. Per his request, he asked me to post this photo of his sidestand.

    Looks good, with a clear mounting point to the rear of the footpeg bolt. I'd spring for this if the price is right. My only negative thought is that the rear mounting eye appears to look weak...

    The front mount is the rear engine mounting through the frame stud and the rear mount uses the left foot rest pivot bolt that has been bushed so that the foot rest bolt can be done up tight and the foot rest still pivot.
    It did not appear to have any flex and is probably ideally located for a fully laden bike but it does affect the operation of the centre stand, I think from memory it had to be folded up before you lifted the bike up on to the centre stand. Hope that helps, it is for sale and the original poster has first option if he wants it, $140us shipped.
