Bmw scooters

    At my local dealer today for service on my motorcycle, asked about the new scooter and arrival date(have a deposit on one) silence. Seems in the US we may not see them till March of 2013. BMW is being very silent on issue
    Has anyone seen one on the road in Europe or the UK yet?

    It might be the same delay here in the U.K.
    I heard there are quality issues here, I have a feeling this scoot is going to go the same way as the BMW C1.

    Props to BMW for not releasing something before it's ready.

    I'd love to take a peek at the BMW scooter, but on paper it's really not an improvement on the Burgman 650 in any major way.

    Perhaps when they get 'em on the road it'll be a diff story, we'll see:ear

    Its not a xenaphobe thing. I feel BMW gets a pass on severely overpricing their stuff due
    to the fantastic job of image manipulation they do. To me, its sort of disingenuous to
    market what will probably end up being the worlds most expensive scooter, and not using
    a BMW motor. They do that with the 650 too, though . . . The Suzuki will continue to
    be what it always has been. Big 4 status quo.

    Those plants will (according to your linked reports) be manufacturing for the markets in which they are located.....not the US market. In fact the models of bikes they'll be building aren't even US models.

    Spin it as you like, but Im not expecting a Phillipine or Indian (dot, not feather) built Suzuki at my local hometown Suzi dealer.

    Not anytime soon anyway.

    Images what BMW sells . Nice looking but at 10 grand no for me because thats a toy. Hell at that price I would have to ride it till I die to save on gas. I ll stick with a 2 grand bike and ride it till it or I die. As to bike makers bulding plants in india other other place those market are huge compared to the 3% of all scooter and bikes that are sold here. Usa / canada may be 20% of the cash cow for bike makers . Most anything sold here isn't going to be cheap .

    Still these two (Sport & GT) are German designed.

    Kymco doesn't analyze & test Burgman Execs and Yamaha Tmax' machines for a full 12 months (to the best of my knowledge), and then set out to design similar competitive products. Kymco doesn't have (as far as I am aware) a drop-down extension to increase under-seat capacity during park. Kymco doesn't have a fixed engine (could be wrong .. have not looked inside MyRoad 700i) like a motorcycle, but the usual scooter swing engine in all of their range.

    Only real niggle is that BMW doesn't seem to understand the rationale behind Suzuki's SECVT transmission -- and have stayed with plain bob-weights and springs to manage power transmission ratios.

    If a BMW scoot can do for me what one of their motorcycles did for this guy I may have to reconsider BMW next time I'm up for buying a new ride.:clap

    Please define BMW motor.

    a) A motor made in the Spandau factory by a German worker using German machinery.
    b) A motor made in the Spandau factory by a Turkish immigrant worker using a German machinery.
    c) A motor made just outside Berlin in a Kymco factory by a German worker using German machinery.
    d) A motor made just outside Berlin in a Kymco factory by a Turkish immigrant worker using German machinery.
    e) A motor made in Taiwan in a Kymco factory but designed by a BMW engineer but made using German machinery and using German quality control standards.
    f) A motor made in Taiwan in a Kymco factory but designed by a BMW engineer but made using Japanese machinery and using Japanese quality control standards.
    f) A motor made in Taiwan in a Kymco factory but designed by a BMW engineer but made using Taiwanese machinery and using German quality control standards.

    I suggest that for some folks a large part is xenophobia, bragging rights, making fun of people if they do not ride Harleys or other proper motorbikes (poor Tacoma), or being afraid of being made fun of because your BMW engine is not made at Spandau.

    Why cannot folks admit that there are some specialist engine making factories like Rotax, Kymco and Yamaha (who make car engines for low-volume manufacture) and that there is nothing wrong with these. Do people not read the GS forums concerning the number of final drive failures from parts machined in the Spandau factory.

    I believe in letting the BMW scooters stand or fall on their own merits wherever they are made. I would be quite happy to buy a Triumph Bonneville made in their Far East factory. Even the Hinckley Triumph factory buys crankcase castings made in Spain.

    I am happy that my Honda scooter is made in Italy - Europe's largest market for scooters.

    As I said before it is a global economy and one has to learn to live with it. However you are not alone in your distrust and many Germans would not buy a machine assembled at a BMW factory in China - but they are very happy that BMW assembles in China and makes a healthy profit from selling to the Chinese.

    One post in this thread suggested that the BMW scooter was a toy (another Harley owner??) - but I do not think this is what BMW or the customers believe. It is strange and not entirely rational world - and thank heavens that we are all different :1drink
