Quick question about the road to Falls creek from Omeo highway: is this sealed or gravel up to Falls Creek and on to Mt Beauty?

    Thanks

All sealed, but usually some loose gravel on the surface. Be wary. Trust me I know lol.

    As JB said.... sealed.

Omeo Hwy has a little dirt remaining (13km);however, coming from Omeo it is sealed all the way out past Anglers Rest (Blue Duck Inn) then up the Bogong High Plains and through Falls Creek down to Mt Beauty.
Would be still some snow this time of year.

Only dirt is between Mitta Mitta and Glen Wills.

Not sure where you're heading after Mt Beauty, but the Towonga Gap is great, if heading over to Bright; as is the Gundowring road if headed towards Albury/Wodonga.

Yes I put the multistrada over the edge as a Land Rover came wide around a bend. Still had room to go through, but the loose stuff within a metre of the edge provides no grip.

Down into the trees it went and the throttle was pinned to redline for quite a while.

The motor has never run better since.

    Some great roads around there.

A lot of high country tracks and some roads are seasonally closed for winter and this is one of them.

They are usually closed a couple of days after the Queens Birthday and are opened in time for the Melbourne Cup weekend, so should be open by the end of this month.

Thanks folks, appreciate the tips, especially about the loose edges! Looking forward to heading that way in mid-November from Sydney and hoping it won't be too cold...

    cheers

It can be mid to high 20's or it can be snowing or anything in between. You'll need to watch the forecasts.

Make sure you get at least one pass on this stretch over the range.

    Hey Maf,

I spent some time working on this road turning fire ravaged trees into totem poles(so they couldn't reach the road when they fell).

I wouldn't imagine that you will be riding at night but if you do, beware of the falls creek to Bogong section with regard to deer.

I drove down late one night and must have seen 50 or more deer on the road. They didn't run or move off the road with any hast at all.

Coincidently, I'm working at Tumut at the moment and nearly hit one this afternoon.

Happy travels, it's a great part of Au.

That's why spot lighters love sambar deer. They don't run away when they are in the headlights, but at least they don't usually jump out at you either unless they have a young one on the other side of the road.

Wombats are probably a bigger problem, but at least they are more predictable than kangeroos that you might come across before you get to this section of road.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. Will definitely be doing Tawonga gap and back round thru Harrietville and over Mt Hotham, with possible side trip to Mt Beauty. Interesting to hear about the deer!

I spoke to some Sydney fellas at Mitta Mitta yesterday. They said Bogong Road was clean and great. They also said the Mt Hotham road is still only open 1300-1400 M-F but open all day Sat/Sun.

I rode the Omeo Hwy between Anglers Rest and Mitta Mitta and can confirm that there's still 13km still to be sealed.

This sign is in the middle third of the dirt.

Within the 13km there are some short sections with lots of loose stone (south end) almost ready for the final layer. Not much though. Mostly it's a smooth packed clay, wide and easy riding. I was glad it was dry however, as it might've been a tad slippery for a laden road bike if not.

    Once done, it'll be fantastic.
