Bonny SE-R will be called "Street Tracker"

    According to "Motorcyclist" magazine, the source of all wisdom and knowledge (!?!), Triumph is in the early stages of creating an upgraded, performance oriented Bonneville.

    Early model includes inverted forks, Brembo radials with dual disks, bigger rubber, and Ohlins.

    Engine may be increased to 1,000 cc.

    For a couple of years, I expected the next step to be a dream bike called the SE-R...

    The magazine article implied that the air cooled twin would be bored or stroked...

    No mention of a water-cooled triple... but I wouldn't mind a triple if the weight is acceptable...

    I saw this Triumph street tracker at the Barber Museum this spring. I believe the sign on the other side said it was an option. What a cool machine.

    The Thunderbird Sport was a cool bike and I wish they would bring it back. The same way it was. The Bonneville engine is not a good platform to build a performance bike out of, it's a cruiser engine.

    I hope they do. I've been dreaming of a bike with the Bonnies classic good looks, but the Speed Triples performance index.

    Although I hope to god they replace the standard tube frame with something more modern and better suited to a performance bike.

    Basically I want a Speed Triple, with Bonneville tank, seat, and comfort. Surely it can't be that hard right? :evil

    I think it will sell well if they get the motor up to a 1200 at least, and get the weight up to 600 pounds.
    Even if they did, it might not sell well without then adding a lot of plastic to it and going mono shock..

    600lbs?! Good god I hope not! If it's gonna be a sporting spec bike the weight should be closer to 450-475 lbs. Wet. If they were aiming at the cruiser market, I suppose that could be the way to go, but with the 1600cc and 1700cc Thunderbird line it seems a bit silly.

    If it's gonna be a Bonne R, in the true sense of an R bike than than it needs to be light, fast, high revving, and powerful. They could do it with a twin, bored to 1000cc would be nice. With some freer flowing pipes and good fueling should be able to make at least 110 hp, and a respectable torque figure.

    I hope they do go mono-shock. In my mind it should be a serious road sport bike with bonneville inspired looks. Built off the speed triple platform, rather than the existing Bonneville platform. I realize this is highly unlikely, but damn it could be sweet. I'm hoping for vintage looks with REAL modern performance.

    My wild imaginings aside, anyone find anything more official about the bike?

    Some of the cantankerous Senior Tour riders are grousing about this comment... :lol3

    My previous concept of a Bonny SE-R included:

    1. Upgraded front end with dual disks and inverted forks.
    2. Upgraded shocks... never thought monoshock would be added to this model.
    3. Six speed tranny.
    4. More power from more cc's with better breathing and free flowing exhaust.
    5. Standard sized 17 inch wheels capable of the wide variety of rubber available.
    6. Switchable ABS.

    The photo included in "Motorcyclist" appeared to reflect most of these concepts.

    I wouldn't want 600 lbs and more plastic... 1,000 cc's would be plenty for me.

    This sounds exciting! From what I understand, this motor was originally designed with enough "headroom" to increase the displacement to 1200cc. Any improvement in the (decent riding) suspension should make it ride and handle even better. I have an arrow 2 into 1 sans airbox, Cogent Dynamics adjustable front fork(big improvment!) I am saving for smooth bore carbs and some nicer rear shocks for my 07 Bonneville. It's a great, cheap street ride and the Street Tracker sounds even better. :clap

    Looks like we're looking at two different pictures....

    I'm looking on page 12 of the March, 2013 edition of "Motorcyclist", at a black Bonny with dual disks, inverted forks, and chopped fuel tank.

    The bike has an alloy front wheel and a spoked rear wheel. The bike is being ridden as opposed to a static shot.

    The engine is a traditional vertical, parallel twin with an Arrows two-into-one exhaust.

    The magazine's website has not been updated with this issue's "Up to Speed" segment.

    hmmm, I very much hope there is some truth to this, that Triumph builds something along the lines of the new CB1100. I test rode a new Thruxton a few years back and was sorely disappointed, the feel and the sound of the engine was very bland, reminded me of a '70's Honda twin (I started riding back then, rode the Japanese bikes and the classic Triumphs, BSA's, Nortons, etc)...instead eventually ended up with a second Norton Commando and a modern Triumph Tiger. A new take on the Thunderbird Sport would be very cool, the triple engine is not bland at all. The picture of the black bike above looks like a photoshop job but if they really do build something along those lines it would be excellent...
    FWIW I have an '06 Tiger and it definitely looks kinda weird but in the meantime it works great as an all rounder/practical version of the Street Triple

    Team Latus Racing has signed Jimmy Lewis to be the rider of their Triumph Flat Tracker In AMA Pro this season. Joe Kopp will be heading the team.

    Jason Desalvo will be back with them in AMA Sportbike.

    It is going to be a good year. :freaky

    I'd rather they go in the other direction. Build a lightweight, sport performance 500-750cc parallel twin with good suspension and comfortable ergos. And do it without making it a friggin' midget bike. Thoroughly modern engineering, classic style where possible, i.e. tank, fenders, etc, but no heavy lead sled steel frame.

    NOT a repli-racer, but a true "performance all-around" with classic good looks.

    The urge towards bigger engines just means more weight.
