Aggravating story to follow along. Nice to see a positive ending and hope you're happy with it.

Few things I learned I guess...

Careful buying used phones. In this case the seller helped. If meeting a guy in a parking lot at Tims it may not go so well.
Ensure the phone is unlocked, try it before buying. Install your own sim card if possible.
Or just keep getting a new phone every 2 yrs while on some sort of plan by any carrier, and forget buying used.

Ah....I would love to have a new phone but I have a amazing plan that was grandfathered in. Unlimited data....ect.

If I upgrade I lose my plan. So I will be buying phones from here on in. This is the first time buying sight unseen.

I have always met folks at a tims or a mcdees to check that a device works.

Depending on what your needs are new phones are available from $150 outright, then unlock it for a $15 code off the internet (eBay).
And starting later this year all phones in Canada will come unlocked; CRTC throwing the consumers a bone.

And they'll have to unlock your old phones for free.
