I did it last june; the trip is amazing! Although there is not a very clear ER route (everywhere people call their routes ER, because it is good for tourism, of course), but the track I did –without extensive planning, must admit– was mainly tarmac. Maybe because when leaving home I only knew about the cities I must go thru to keep myself into ER, but didn't knew the precise routes. So I searched in place... But I'm not complaining at all: all tarmac roads where very nice to ride!

About your intention to downhill the Cunha-Paraty road, I wouldn't. The road has no maintenance at all and the situation is truly bad. If you don't have great skills and lots of experience (like I don't), you probably will have problems. I did it from Paraty to Cunha and it was not easy... but worth it!

One thing outside ER but worthy is the “volta dos 80”, a circuit around the “Parque Nacional de Itatiaia”. Very tricky roads, lots of absolutely amazing water falls and great landscapes. I did it in my way from Itamonte - MG to Visconde de Mauá.

UPDATE: remembering more precisely the routes I did, I can't really say that I truly rode the Estrada Real. :)
I stopped in Tiradentes and made 2 main deviations: Itamonte and Visconde de Mauá. The trip was awesome, anyway. But maybe I should do the true ER anytime again... hehehe!!

Cheers,
Rodrigo

Hi, I'm 22 years old and I'm from Campo Grande, MS - Brasil. Planning a trip to Ushuaia - Alaska, I intend to use about one year on this trip. I've started planning it already, but I thought that it was better to ask for some information...do you know any Brazilian rider who has done this trip lately? I'm worried about documents and this kind of stuff.
Thank you for your attention.
Here is a video of my 1 day trip to Bonito with a friend.

Hi Rodrigo,

I didn´t see that you is my neighbour, it´s great ! (because we live in Parana State)

I do some trips to know some dirty roads near my home, or a little bit far, on pavement roads, only to hanging around.

If you like, We could ride together.

Hey! Sorry for the long lead time to answer this...

I am ALL SET... leaving Sao Paulo on Monday July 1st towards Paraty and Tuesday I will start the ER. I have 100% of the original tracks mapped in my GPS.

If time allows (planning 10 days) I will ride:

Leg 0 - SP to Paraty
Leg 1 - Paraty - Ouro Preto - The "Old Way ER"
Leg 2 - OP - Diamantina (Caminho dos Diamantes)
Leg 3 - do tarmac Diamantina back to Ouro Preto (or Belo Horizonte)
Leg 4 - "New Royal Road" from Ouro Preto to Rio.

This goes about 2,000 km... I plan to ride as much as possible without going iron butt-like, maybe stop at some nice sites for pics and views but not a lot of tourism/colonial church visiting, etc...

Going solo as my buddy bailed on me too close to the trip... :huh

Are you guys really doing it? We might end up meeting somewhere... company would not hurt... let me know in case you want to touch base and agree upon some meeting point.

Best!

Guys,

the Rally dos Sertões race gets more exciting each year.
In this 21th edition, Marc Coma and Cyril Despres are fighting for the first place.
The inmate VDG started a thread about the rally.

Does anyone know if the is another model that shares the same exhaust. If so, maybe that model is here in the USA and I can order the correct one.
