"New to me" 309 Fantic. I took the cap off the front master cylinder this evening to change the brake fluid and found two pieces of course plastic mesh inside with the fluid. A better description would be to say they were small cubes of plastic scouring pad. Do these belong in there? Are they some sort of baffle?

I've worked on and ridden lots of bikes and have never seen anything like that in a mastercylnder on motor cycles, maybe some of the smaller Cars would have it but never seen it in motor cycle. My two cents

My 307 Fantic had the same thing, never removed them and everything worked fine. No idea what function they served.

After quite an extensive web search I found that a Suzuki of some sort from the mid '80's used the same master cylinder. The parts fiche showed these and listed them as "filters".
I cleaned and dried them quite well and put them back in place. As long as they don't deteriorate all will be well.
