awesome day in dirt today until the last 100ft of the ride. was forced wide by some people in the trail, hit a ditch, whacked my nose on the windscreen, and busted them both. the people in the trail thought it was funny as shit...:huh

looking at replacing the screen and obviously want to go with a shorty. does anyone have a pic of the orange tint, moose short screen on a 990r?

this is the one i'm looking for...

    thanks.

I don't know.. Anything without a folded lip can cut your neck. It sounds impossible, but I know of an Africa Twin guy who had cut his screen down, and unfortunately he died when the suspension bottomed out and the screen cut / broke his neck. At least the stock screen only cuts your nose / face :rofl No ofcourse in an unlucky situation it can hurt the neck as well.. but imagine a razor blade sharp edged screen - like the one in the picture? (the stock screen has a littlebit rounded edge if I remember correctly)

i had teh moose screen a couple weeks back. like most, the fit of mine was not the best. but, for $55, who really cares? after a few rides i took a rock to the screen and it shattered and i lost my ezpass....

i will be cutting down a stocker to similiar dimensions toreplace it.

went ahead and ordered the orange shorty. i have read all the complaints about the fit but i figure for the $50 it was worth a shot. at worst i will send it back and buy a OEM screen and cut it down.

will post pics once i get it.

I got the dark screen from Moose rather than the orange. Like everyone else says, the fit is bad but it went right on. I love using it in on dirt, I get a ton more air to my chest and stay cooler.

thank goodness for nose guards. hard to see but you can tell where the initial impact hit the guard, the traveled down to the lens. there is a flat crease in the lens the exact thickness of the windscreen. without this, i would look even uglier.... :lol3

I broke my nose and received a life long reminder of my beloved 950 as well. Cut the stock windscreen way down, much farther than the moose screen and have only taped it a few times.
The other advantage is clean smooth air.

Streetbikes have windscreens, dirtbikes dont. Theres a reason for that that is documented in this thread.

I can tell the minute I start dirtriding on my DR that the Cee-Bailey windscreen is in the way and dangerous,I remove it before I go.

    Hey Laramie
Sorry to hear about your mishap ! glad it wasnt worse !

that is why I built this one
    [IMG]
absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE it !
it smooths out the airflow too and still blocks wind
    and I have floppy mirrors
I ride pretty radical off road stuff sometimes

I made a few extras but gave it up when I moved to Oregon
it is infusion molded carbon fiber with UV resistant resin
I still have the Rubber Top Infusion mold and 3 gallons of UV resistant infusion resin, vacuum pump, pressure pot, but I have no shop space, and other reasons, sold 28 and broke even
My PM box was getting stuffed with orders but I couldnt keep up and had to tell them I quit
    Cheers , Lonewolf

i am lucky enough to have one of dusttodust's screens, and it is an awesome piece. i have one of his "blems" and i can't find the problem with it at all.... i have since scratched it up pretty good offroad, and i love it. (i had short run with the moose because my ezpass would not work through the dusttodust's screen, but after moose shattered and i lost the ezpass, i went back to old faithfull after)

i am very glad i got one before you quit selling them. why not just make them out of normal fiberglass, and ditch the whole carbon thing? then you wouldn't have to be so anal about the weave of the carbon, and could sell them cheaper. just sayin... :D

ya, i thought about talking to you lonewolf but frankly don't like the idea of not being able to see through the screen. don't know why, but i do. i look at these guys that have the tall CF screens and think, "how the hell can you see what's in front of you?" yours i'm sure are better but still opaque.

hopefully it all work fine and looks good. supposed to get the screen today and will post some pics of what it looks like.

as for the nose, the swelling is almost gone but i have two big black eyes that make people wonder what the hell happened to me. i've just been saying i was lipping off to my wife and she back handed me. that usually gets a laugh. :lol3

I have the rally raid screen and like it a lot more than stock.
I was a bit worried that I wouldn't like it since you cant see through it,
but it has not been a problem for me at all...
    Get well soon

i thought the same thing, but it is not a problem at all. when i had the smoked moose, i didn't look through it either, because it was short, and i am not the tallest guy out there. :rofl

when i wheelie 1st ~3rd, i usually look to the left of the bike anyway... :lol3

exactly. i spent the whole day standing, except in the tight twisty bits where i was constantly sliding the rear into the corners. i admit, i sit for those parts. still don't have the confidence that this 500lb mass is gonna stick. :eek1

as for the moose screen.....i changed my mind. i'm gonna keep it.

went out this morning and put it back on, marked the bad areas with a sharpie, then got out the dremel and cleaned it up. now it fits fine and the looks are growing on me. one trick for those of you who do trim yours, after the grinding, cutting, or whatever you do, get out a pencil torch and run it along the edges that you worked. this will clean up the rough spots and bring back the "clear" edge. this works on all plastics. i've done it on body panels, head light guards, and now this screen. just take your time and don't put too much heat on at one. you will see it start to clear up as you apply the flame. stop when your happy with the look.

i will post some pics once i figure out why google isn't uploading full size pics from my phone. the small ones are just too hard to see anything.

    laters,

    laramie :beer

oh- i also ordered a new OEM screen from Chip. cost me $55 with free shipping. figured wtf, might want a back-up.

I found out what it feels like to kiss the top of the stock wind screen. I was on single track and the front end washed out on my 950. I hit the top of the screen with my top row of teeth and it slid up my nose. At impact I thought I knocked my front teeth out. I looked in the mirror and thought I slit my nose. I lucked out and only knocked my teeth loose and after 3 months feel fine now. As for the slit nose, it was only a abrasion and it healed in a month.
Bottom line, if you do cut your screen down make sure you remove all sharp edges before kissing it.:D:D:D:D
