I plan on flying into Barcelona, Spain to buy a bike and drive it down the west coast to South Africa. I have heard of getting export /tourist plates.

Will having these plates cause me an issue with making it across borders? Will I be able to get a registration in my name? Anything I should be aware of?

I am a US Citizen and plan to be buying a Honda CRF250.

    Thanks.

    Hi
Unfortunately you cannot buy a motorbike in the EU unless you own a property or have a lease to rent a property within the country you intend to buy the bike in. You have to have an national identity number in Spain. Not going to be easy or cheap for you to obtain being that you do not have an EU passport.

    Derek,

Non-residents are able to get NIEs issued. The Spanish consulate is also willing to issue me one in the USA. Although I can see how registering it in Spain without residency would be difficult.

NIE's are actually not that hard to get. Previously it had to be applied for in person, at the consulate for a fee of approximately $25. It now can be done online through the Spanish consulate website.

    Hi

You will not be able to insure it. A Spanish registered bike must be insured in Spain and without an address and you being registered with the local council this will be impossible. To buy you must have either the deeds of a property or a lease showing a rental agreement or a certificate showing that your are a registered inhabitant of the municipality. I have lived between my home in Alicante Spain and the UK since 2002 and whilst not a legal expert I do know the pitfalls of trying to buy a bike or car in Spain having done it myself. Not so difficult for a person coming from a member state but for someone from outside I would put money on that it will be impossible.

    Bump.

Any resolution? I once asked a similar question here and was offered an option to register a bike with a European national. ??
