C denotes class, number is usually given by the sanctioning body. Unless it's a Craigslist bike, then it's just to impress the high school girl down the street.

do you change numbers depending on where you race? or are you stuck with that number for a year?

If you go to a race outside your region and the number is already assigned to another rider, then you have to change yours. If Tim is at the meeting tonight, he can give you better details than I can.

FTR organizes for the "backup" books by background, # color and letter. For example, every 250 rider has green backgrounds with white numbers. The letter separates by level of rider. C is "slowest", B is middle and A is fastest. You can move up classes voluntarily (rarely happens, people want trophies) or you may "point out" your current class if you earn so many advancement points in a certain period. Enduros doesn't matter since you get a number assigned according to your row and position #.

A lot of racing series have moved away from any sort of #plate affiliation, but several have higher dollar transponder systems. FTR system is good, but a little outdated compared to some.
