My bike is ready and I bought some new boots on the flea market, should arrive early next week.

Anybody want to join me for a short ride on the 10th or 11th?

Likely to be two or three of us keen to do Simpson probably on the way there. I am certainly up for it, been a bucket list for me and may be last opportunity while I am still capable.

Hi folks, I'm going to see my son who's in Port Douglas. Any one know of any bike hire places in that neck of the woods? My wife and I will be there 14th to 25th of March.

G'day mate - there's not too much around unless you are happy hiring a harley. Eagle rider have an office in the main street of Cairns. https://www.eaglerider.com/cairns
and so does another mob called choppers. http://www.choppersmotorcycles.com.au/hire.htm

In Port Douglas, these guys hire anything Scooters to V stroms to Cruisers. http://www.plazaportdouglas.com.au/port-douglas-motorbike-hire.html

    Enjoy your stay !

Wait and see what the weather is like before making any commitments as well.

There’s a storm that might bring half a metre of rain predicted to cross coast somewhere within 500km north or south of Cairns late next week and it’s a highly unpredictable storm, so who knows what will happen after that. There’s some highly unusual weather patterns in the region at the moment and some places are seeing the heaviest rain in decades.

Even if you’re happy to ride in the rain, all the roads around Port Douglas are dangerous/slippery and prone to fallen trees and landslides. The roads might be closed.

The weather could be perfect, but I wouldn’t book a hire bike two weeks in advance.

Bit of an easter ride on. Some of the Townsville guys are trailering up to Cairns and probably parking at my place on Thursday night or maybe Friday Morning. Plan is to (Day one - Good Friday) head up to Irvinebank via Gillies, Mount Baldy, Irvinebank and then take the Stannary hills track across to Mutchilba on then on to Mount Mulligan via Dimbulah. Through Mount Mulligan and up to the Palmer River Roadhouse for the night (Friday night).
Day 2 - set off back down the highway a bit and head in to Palmer River itself and on to Maytown to Laura via Old Coach Road. Up to Hopevale and through to Elim Beach for the night (Saturday night). Day 3 - Elim Beach to Cooktown and on to Lions den for lunch, then CREB and on to Mount Molloy. Day 4 - home from Mount Molloy.

Feel free if you would like to join us for all or part of the ride - it is unsupported i.e. you will need to be self sufficient. Will post up here some more accurate distances to account for fuel range once more accurately calculated. More detail on departure point and time once finalised.

    Photo for attention: Cooktown crossing

What a great ride, I miss the deep north. All those places we used to ride to back in the eighties. Have fun:clap.

That floodway always washes out first. I took Macdoc on his first mt mulligan trip the day after similar flash flooding, his photos are posted way back in this thread.

A lot of man handling of bikes to get out there but spectacular to see the waterfalls coming off the cliffs if you get there.

Doesn't have to be a cyclone to spin, any tropical low will spin as well.

This one has already reached the coast and is moving west. It may turn into a cyclone over gulf and threaten Darwin or Broome, but it's not going to do anything for cairns other than the rain we're getting today/tomorrow. If it misses darwin then it could be very strong/dangerous by the time it reaches western australia.

There's a Category 4 cyclone a thousand clicks off the coast that is predicted to move away from us.

So nothing really to worry about now... just be happy the rain is helping out all the farmers and filling dams. But conditions are favourable for more severe weather so better keep an eye on things.
