    I agree with the sag. And with more travel comes more sag. I used to race mx and downhill mtb so I am very familiar with suspension set up in long travel applications. I'm of the belief you can never have enough, and the more you have the faster you can go which is what I'm aiming for. As for the tubes, I agree but they have done enough of them for this bike and without issue, that I'm willing to trust it. Hardest part will be getting a side and center stand for her once she's all leggy 'n' shit!

    As for Shibby being able to tell the difference in how a bike feels using lighter weight oil (which I agree with so long as it isn't too light) before and after a trail stop, all I can say is wow. I wish I was as acutely attuned to such things as you are. I'd be doing suspension set ups for a living with a team somewhere. I'm not being sarcastic either. That is pretty impressive. I raced until i was 15 and I have been on bikes all my life since I was 4 and I've never developed that kind of feel and I'm 38 now. I know what I like, and it takes awhile to set up any bike I own but nothing on that level.

    Trust me. I notice most things people do not and get bothered by small details. People constantly remind me of this. It depends if I am willing to put the cost and effort into fixing them, but I always notice them. Anybody think letting air pressure out of their forks is noticeable? Most think not. I find there is a huge difference once the temp has come up to equalize the pressure to ATM. This has to be done AT operating tempand during the ride to work.

    Lets just say we agree to disagree. Everybody should tailer their suspension to how and what they ride. I have both firmer off-road suspension and a plusher set-up. While there is benefit to both, I feel my soft suspension on my XRR reduces its ability in more places then where it gains from being softer. That being said I did a 26,000km trip on it with plenty of very, very bumpy roads and it handled that great and my fillings likely thank me. It's also done many Moab's and Baja's trails, as well as countless mountain passes in our own back yard. If only it was a bit firmer it would be the do-it-all suspension for me.

    In regards to oil, I'm not talking about just changing oil. I'm saying using thinner oil and tayloring the shim stack for the lighter oil. It's what I did with my XRR, but my springs are a bit too light, up front for sure, and with load both front and back. If you look at viscocity curves, the thicker oil goes from thick to very thin with a mild temp swing. The thinner oil will change much, much less. Shear as it may, that's a wear property. Not a changing property on every ride.

    Some people are just fast. They hop on anything and they are good. Lots of our local pro's buy stock MX bikes, don't change anything and win races. Others spend 1000's on suspension, bike parts, anodized shit, and struggle to meet top Junior or B classes (Ok, Juniors have become fast over recent years). I ride with a top Intermediate and he hasn't changed anything on his KTM, until I told him to try a few things including jetting, bar position, and suspension settings and he took and approved my suggestions. He in turn confirmed things wrong with my new to me bike and gave me back advice from a different aspect. Sometimes people's skill can overcome any details on a bike. Sometimes people don't know better or don't have that sensory feedback to know what's not right, or could be improved. Sometimes people see and feel things differently. Discussing these things is half of my enjoyment of riding. I never turn down a ride on my friends bikes =)

    Leggy 'n' shit is right! I think I'm going to stick with 265mm myself as I plan on keeping it mostly what I guess everyone calls an "adventure" bike nowadays... It will be my daily rider, my Waiporous destroyer, but not my singletrack machine. The 450 has filled in a lot of the gaps in my riding and the 990 is more than competent on anything I throw it on, but I have more fun on tight stuff with the 450 and then I'm not the only guy on a 990 in a pack of dirtbikes, lol!

    Let me know if you have troubles getting SS and center stand. I know a few places and also you could even just mod your stands with extensions.

    Age old saying... "The best you know is the best you've ridden." I completely agree with what you just said and it's always been my opinion that the rider makes the most difference, period. I've seen the progression in myself over the last 10 years and I can ride a totally modified dirt bike and my mostly stock (ala disgustingly spongy suspension) pretty much the same. The better the rider, the less things like tires and minor misgivings in suspension really make a difference. Yes, of course, for high levels of competition every tenth counts, but in the real world with us schmucks and our riding I think peg time and making yourself ride things you think you can't ride make for a better ride.

    I never turn down a chance to pull a wheelie on someone else's bike either! :1drink

    Edmontonian checking in here.. I'm guessing there is no riding to be had around Calgary right now either? Seems that way from all the bickering online :roflI just picked up a husaberg 570 which I plan to convert to dualsport. But this white stuff is truly depressing.

    Going out Sunday. What you do you mean?

    I have a few friends with the 570's. Love them for dual sporting. Not so much for bush bikes.

    Pick up some studded tires / stud your own and ride year round! Amazingly fun. 6-10" of fresh snow with no tracks is just as good as that flowing single track in the summer.

    where are you riding? I have only ridden in Mclean creek area once, never explored around calgary beyond that. I'd love to take my bike out with some studs, but can't find anyone local who is nutty enough to do the same. I don't want to ride alone in these conditions in case something happens.

    Well,

    It didn't happen. My Saturday night consisted of moving in a friends hot tub after split boarding. Then after dinner coming home and studding tires till 11pm. Installed this morning but they were only going out at ~1ish and I had some running around to do and decided to back out.

    I may be wanting to go out tomorrow. 90% of my riding is in Wiaparous these days. Mclean is, or will be closed shortly. Dec 1st? Just need to put mud flaps on my hitch carrier in hopes of keeping snow spray off the bike.

    Never a good idea to ride by yourself, although I confess I have a time or two. Winter conditions makes it that much worse.

    What studs are you running and what do you like to ride?

    Don't have studded tires for the bike yet. That will be soon.
    I'll set it up for ice riding. I'm sure there's a few good rivers around that can offer a lot of fun. I'm not familiar with the Calgary area.
    Last year I just took out my 350X, without studs. It was really fun. Looking to get onto 2 wheels this winter.

    I don't have studs either. I was planning on putting my bike on the ice this year as well, although I don't think those are any good for trail riding?

    dirtydeeds you're in red deer? I don't know of any spots north of there or south of edmonton to ride. Looks like it will be warming up during the week though and I'll probably check out the sandy trails around here to see if they are ridable.

    Only in Red Deer for a bit. Take possession of a place in NW Calgary on the 21st.
    I do know a few spots around Red Deer, Edmonton and a couple in MacMurray. Calgary will be new to me.

    There are studs for trail riding and studs for ice.

    Correct. The ice studs work, but not nearly as good as trail studs.

    For trails, most people go with Best Grip, or Trelleborgs. In either event, get out the wallet. My tires cost me around $790 and I did them myself with Best Grip.

    This week looks too warm to get out snow riding which sucks. My fingers are now crossed for snow! Not necessarily cold, but bring on the winter sports!

    I was out in Wiaparous yesterday. About 4-8 inches on the ground, but bare on south facing hills which get sun. All legal trails will not be rideable with rubber and those not legal wouldn't be much fun with frozen ground.
