Two of us KLR buffs left the Bay Area and hit Fort Bragg, CA. From there went north to the Usal trail and enjoyed 30 miles of great scenery, dirt roads, and eventually - clam chowder in Shelter Cove.

The weather was the best the summer of 2010 has offered up in this region with sunshine and temps in the 50's - 60's coastal. The Usal trail is certainly something everyone with a DS should ride. Fantastic redwoods, and views of the Pacific. The road does go all the way through from HWY 1 to Shelter Cove (even though the sign says "no through traffic")

All in all we rode about 600 miles over 3 days, averaging 53 mpg on the KLRs.<iframe src="http://www.zumodrive.com/photo/embed/75zUOWU1Mj" frameborder="0" height="600" width="800"></iframe>

you really can't lost on the usal rd.
after 1 heads inland, it's the 1st left rd, says usal rd painted on the rd.
you drop into beach area and ride straight ahead uphill to leave & continue northwards.
the road is seldom used past this point.
we saw that sign and it looked like the road was closed but it's open.
guess county doesn't maintain and thus "closed"
at 4 way intersection it's straight to shelter, left down to sinkyone & right on the paved briceland rd.
    you're headed straight to shelter.
road turns to paved at the end & then left & DOWN hill to shelter.
gas is on the left heading down hill.

make sure you take the time to ride down to sinkyone (left at 4 way) and hang out on the bench behind the barn on the right. some of the best view in the state!!!

agree usal is one of the best ds rides in the country.

Agreed. Don't miss Sinkyone Park (Bear Harbor) when you're there.

True, can't get lost; although there's that spot where Usal turns a hard left, but looks like it continues straight ahead. I zipped by the turn AGAIN a few weeks ago. :norton If you see a junked car in the woods on your left northbound you missed it too! :lol2

I've ridden up and down the 1 and have flown into shelter cove for some camping, but haven't DS'd it yet. Sounds like a blast!

We actually scored some freshly caught crab from the local fishermen there as well :1drink

The locals say if you don't fish or do construction for a living, then you must be growing pot.
