hi paul, love to help except my road trips are limited. it is going to be hot if you ride inland. you'll find cooler weather and beautiful landscape along the pacific coast, highway 1.

check out santa barbara, cambria, san simeon, etc. all the way to san francisco.

carrizo plains might be hot, but who cares as long you stay hydrated. take soda lake road (mostly dirt), it can be done on a road bike. a friend of mine who lives there rides his ninja250. head north and stay close to the coast, you'll be fine.

I have a philosophical question for you, Joel (and the regulars in this thread)

    Would you do this solo?

The reason I'm asking is although I can pick up the bike alone on a flat dry garage floor...
I'm 57 and starting to worry about getting stuck in the middle of nowhere. On those slick rocks...I don't know.

I pretty much always ride alone.

Nice write up and pics mtbjeff. Must go back soon and discover more of the trails and views. I'm looking forward to exploring the Mammoth and June Lakes area if anyone has any tips and tracks.

i hardly ride solo. lots of riding partners most of the time.

if i do, i make sure have the following:
    1) have my spot on tracking mode and have friends monitor it.
    2) bring the sat phone with fully charged batt
    3) prefer to ride a smaller bike, no bigger than the 640
    4) have enough water, gas and food
    5) have a gps

dropped the bike 2x and that was exhausting. one more, i have to spend the night on the spot.

    june 16 - father's day ride

typically, our route is mcds-cleghorn-silverwood - miller jeep - lake arrowhead - green valley - crab flats - big pine - holcomb - big bear - moonridge - holcomb - big pine - coxey - hesperia - sito's wash - summit valley - mcds.

this sunday, we did the reverse route. hit hesperia in the morning when it's still cool, then get to higher elevations by noon.

i was excited to ride since i haven't seen some of the guys for a while. likewise, i have to test ride the 3pipty and see if the upgrades (steering damper, 14/50, rekluse exp, custom suspension) will hold up for another ride this coming weekend.

we rode to moonridge just to find out that the road was closed due to a special event - mtb race. it is a dirt road and that would have taken us west of big bear city and a block away from our favorite mex restaurant.

oh well, the lake view is not too bad anyway

    ...totally ditto what Joel ez.
I LOVED my 950A. Nothing better than steering that big beast with the rear wheel down a dirt road. Nothing more comfortable nor more capable (yes, even a GS).
But dammit I got pissed one day after getting into another 'predickament' alone on an unknown trail. Bustin' my ass getting it turned around.

And yes, like you, I almost always ride solo.
At the post century mark I probably wouldn't take a big bike offroad much without a wingman to help me pick it up.

Short story I sold the big one and bought a middleweight (325lbs), turned out rather boring.
Then bought a sub-middle weight (295lbs). Great fun that.
Now I got an even smaller bike, that even I can pick up. (245)

I think that Bike + Skill & Strength = Route, the rest is all bravery/balls/common sense (or not).

If your takin' your GS for a casual ride through the woods in the middle of the day on a well traveled dirt road, go for it. A couple shallow stream crossings won't killya, unless of course you get caught under the bike and drown.

More challenging stuff, go lighter or get stronger, or find someone else who's strong to go with.

I mean, how embarassing is this?

Thanks for including us in your RR. Looks like you guys had a great time. BTW, Azteca is less than 1/2 mile (as the crow flies) from my house. We definitely need to keep in touch better.

    Catch you guys next time.

scott, riding in big bear at this time of the year is wonderful. probably the closest place to ride in the summer time when it hits 100F here at home.

lucky you having a place there, i'm envious. lots of good riding....and in the trees.

we've been coming to azteca i think 4 years in a row, at least 2 a year. good mex food.

    will see you again.
