after a good lunch, we headed out on a high speed dirt road to rocky gap at red rock canyon.

tim lead most of the wayn
    [IMG]

the first part was really easy, just follow the tire tracks
    [IMG]

lots of tire spinning with little forward motion
    [IMG]

as we gained elevation, going uphill started to get rough due to slushy ground, loose dirt and hidden rocks
    [IMG]

have to walk the bike a few times
    [IMG]

there are a few times we have to scout the road ahead

deeper snow the farther we go up

    soon it was dark
    [IMG]

i have done night ride and snow ride but not at the same ride...:D
    [IMG]

not much to see and someone has a blown headlight...:huh
    [IMG]

    the mastermind of this ride
    [IMG]

my crazy partners - tim and lior
    [IMG]

it took us 5 hours to cover @ 15 miles.....:lol3

honestly, i had some apprehension as we get deeper in the snow, but with tim and lior, i knew we could do it. both are capable riders; likewise tim is in great physical condition, then lior is a very good mechanic. equipment wise, my xr400 was running flawlessly, we got spot and a satphone. we had plenty of water and food. good to know there's no rain in the forecast. i stayed warm most of the time, but not enough for me to withstand spending the freezing evening temperature if we get stuck.

worst case, one or 2 riders could continue to ride and get lior's fully set up 4x4 truck in las vegas and come back for the stranded rider.

    will i do it again?.........hmmmmm.

sue, at one point, i was looking at the 911 button of my spot....:lol3

yes, it was a challenge. that rocky gap is tough enough without snow, but since all the rocks and holes were covered with snow, we didn't see anything intimidating............until we got stuck.

lior, that was an epic ride. having you around makes me fearless....:rofl

cory, it wasn't really that bad. vegas is just about 8 miles away we got in deeper shiiet. just one phone call away and a short copter ride.....:eek1

tahoe is a short ride from you, go and do some pre runs and we'll come...:lol3

Just moved to the San Jose area and purchased a DR650. Hwy1 and the roads running east from the coast have become my new passion. Keep up the reports so I can follow in your footsteps!

Cool Pictures Joel, especially the ones you posted on your Vegas ride in the snow. Looked like a pretty gnarly ride!
Just wanted to say that I had a good time riding with you guys this past Sunday to the Husky Memorial. It was my first time riding with all you guys. I had the black 800GS. My old man is username "MadMAx"
I dont really log on here too much but plan on doing so more often. I would love to ride with you guys more too. Looks like you guys do a lot of really fun trips and know the ropes of all the boss trails to ride.
I rode with Lior quite a few times and he kinda tells me what rides are going on. Anyway, happy holidays to you and safe riding out there.
