Riding to Alaska from the Chicago burbs and looking for a camping spot on my first night. Somewhere between Jamestown and Minot in ND would be great. I cant seem to find much information besides the campgrounds just off the interstate that I would like to stay away from. Help Please!

    Hi Marc,

Many city parks have free camping in the northern plains. Doing a quick google search, I see that Carrington City park has free tent camping with bathrooms as well as 8 RV campsites with hookups. That is the first small town northwest of Jamestown if you are angling up from 84 to Minot from Jamestown. North Dakota may not have a big population but its a friendly state to ride through. People are generally happy to see travelers in the rural areas.

    Have fun!

I camped in a nice pinic area near Washburn off US83. Nice big trees and was out of the wind. Windy country up there. It should be pretty easy to find something; not many people up there and no one seems to bother you.

it's freakin' nuts in north dakota right now with all the energy sector work and related activity. accommodations of any kind are scarce, so i would check with the guys in the regional forum to get a better handle on what to expect, or a definite place to stay. you'll see what i mean when you get there.

Jamestown is mostly safe from the lodging headaches of the oilfield but Minot is on the edge of the chaos. I would strongly suggest sleeping more towards Jamestown then Minot.

Unfortunately, I know more about western ND then eastern ND so I can't help you out with campground recommendations.

like Boss said, Jamestown shouldn't be too bad. However due to the oil activity everything from Bismarck to Glendive and north to the border is booked. I stayed at Icelandic state park a couple years back, but that is a little out of your way.
