Way to go Doug. I enjoy your trips on the offbeat bikes. Hard to believe you made it that far with a muffler on one of them!

    Doug,
Congrats on making it to Magadan and thanks for taking us along. Looking forward to the rest of the trip! By the way, I just spent the last 3 hours reading all 111 pages, it had been a while since I had logged into the RR section on ADV.

    Ride on, Brother, Ride on!

It was a long way between towns, and I stopped for a guy whose bike ran out of gas, my spare was full, as I saw on the map there was nothing out here.

We finally got to a town, & the only gas station was full of bikes, as it was a long way to the next town. After this, it started to rain a bit, and a few times when I stopped, when I tried to start the bike, it would cough & backfire & didn’t want to start, but then after a bit, it would. It seemed like the timing was off, but after this day, I didn’t hit anymore rain for quite awhile, and the bike hasn’t done it since.
I stopped to visit the Kulag memorial, the Kazakh version of the gulags. At one time, this area was full of them, and it covered an area the size of france. There were many different small monuments, from different countries who had citizens imprisoned here.
I met Andrei, Andrei & Natasha on the road, & they were with me when the bike was actin up, so they followed me to the big town, & helped me find a room for the nite, then they went on home to Astana, another 200km away. It was going to get dark before they got home now, but they wouldn’t leave til I was settled. And when they noticed I didn’t have gloves (I’d lost one in Turkmen) Natasha offered me hers. I said thanks, but I’ll buy a pair tomorrow. And I meant to, but could never find any I liked or that fit for another couple weeks J
But was a nice offer. This is how the bike riders here are tho, always helpful. It’s a shame bike riders back in the US have lost this. Not all of them, but most.

Im heading NE now, towards Barnual, Russia. I’d rather deal with borders in the morning tho, so I got a room for the night.

In the distance, the border with Russia. It was a pain to get out of Kaz, I think the guy was totally confused, so he made me wait until another guy showed up. He wasn’t much brighter. Finally they figured out how to use the stamp, and let me go. The RU side was ok, no hassles, went by fast.
I noticed that the guy put my bike info in the computer, but didn’t hand me the usual document. I figured it must be a new system they had, and went on.
Outside the border, 2 chicks in an old Lada sold me a piece of paper that said I had insurance for 3 months. Its probably as useless as tits on a boar hog, but at least I have one.

This area of Russia has huge farms, miles of sunflowers or whatever the crops may be. And of course a lot of bugs as well.

I think it was called. I was told theres a hotel here. I ask people, & they all send me to the same area, but I cant find a damned thing. I’m looking all over, ask more people, and they send me the other way. Sometimes finding a place to sleep is the hardest part of the day.
I stop at a store by the center, & 2 guys pull up. Alexei & Dmitry. Neither can speak English, and we know how bad my Russian is, but they tell me not to worry, and get on the fone. Then they say to wait. Time is ticking. Sun is setting. I’m in a small village with a growing crowd of people.
    Lookit the space alien
That aint no ural he’s riding, what the hell is that?
I don’t know, but get my picture beside it
And so on. In other words, it was my usual evening find a hotel ritual.
I was a bit nervous when it got dark, but they said not to worry.
Next, Dmitry says ok, lets put the bike in my garage. Well, I don’t know him, or his garage, but what the hell…. Then he takes me to a place to sleep. Seems he is a driver or something in the military, and took me to a small local base, and I slept in the officers lounge. And the bike seemed to be safe, he’ll pick me up in the morning, which he did.
Great guys, wouldn’t take a dime, but I did get em to let me buy em a beer at least.

    A witch burning?
    A rolling stones concert?
    Michael Flaherty’s Riverdance?

Nope, was just a farm/agro expo. Was still fun to walk around & look at stuff tho
