So to answer the question, Can this Ural Iron Butt?

YES IT CAN!!! Twenty-three days from Key West to Prudhoe Bay

    Fellow sidecarists,

With all the postings, opinions and debate about the capabilities of the Ural, thought you would be interested in my upcoming cross country Ural ride.

The Iron Butt Association (IBA) has a sanctioned ride called the Ultimate Coast to Coast Challenge (UCCC). One is challenged to ride a motorcycle (two or three wheels) across North America from Key West, Florida to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska in thirty (30) days or less. As they describe it: “You must ride the same motorcycle for the entire ride. No swapping of motorcycles allowed. If you break down, you must repair your bike before continuing and return to the point it broke down and continue your trip.

This ride will take you to the far-north. You can expect snowy conditions EVERY MONTH of the year. The most practical time to plan this ride is in July and August. Even then you may face snow storms, road construction and endless miles of impassable road. Additionally in Canada and Alaska you are dealing with more wildlife than in the rest of North America. You should be prepared for encounters with bears, moose and other large animals that will cross you path.”

All gas stops must be documented. All stops for more than 30 minutes must be accounted for as well as your exact route. Photographs of you and your bike in front of beginning and ending landmarks are required as well as completed witnesses forms. IBA has classified this ride as… Extreme.

Hmmmmm…. OooohK’ay… sounds easy enough to do for most modern day motorcycles - if the rider is up to it. But what about a 68 year old guy on a Ural with it’s 1938 design and Russian metallurgy? According to the most recent official IBA records, this challenge has yet to be completed on a Ural.

So more specifically… can MY Ural iron butt? Together we will find the answer to that question as the ride unfolds. The ride of choice for the IBA challenge is a 2011 Ural, Gobi Desert camo colors named Da’mit. It has both reverse and two-wheel drive.

On Sunday May 19th I leave the safe confines of my home in Texas to ride solo to balmy South Florida to start the challenge. You are invited to follow along the ride’s progress by visiting the blog:

    www.uralinguccc.blogspot.com

With camera and iPad, the plan is to document the daily adventures and misadventures across North America with Da’mit. Camping as much as possible, we will travel the byways of North America’s secondary roads avoiding interstates. Some days will be long, boring, iron butting, while others will be punctuated with challenges.

Hope to encounter other Uralists and sidecarists along the way. Have posted this invite on the Soviet Steeds site also.

    Now… Let’s go Da’mit…

CCjon, it was nice meeting you and Da'mit at the spring TURD and look forward to following along on this experience. All the best for both of you, as the rest of us only dream of doing something like this.

    Howdy CCjon,

I don't know what your route is but if you go through the Seattle area I'd like to meet you and I am sure if you stop in at IMWA in Redmond they would offer you repairs if needed or at least a good look over if you have the time.

PM me if your going to pass near by and I'll arrange to meet up with you and introduce to the folks at IMWA if I am not out gallivanting around the country when you pass through. :deal

Tonight in Homestead, FL, tomorrow (May 23rd) Da'mit and I run down to Key West to officially start the Iron Butt ride to Alaska.

Da'mit is running strong and smooth. Looking forward to getting into cooler country soon.

I don't know if it's on your route, but there is a Ural dealer in Waynesboro TN that I will be trying to get to tomorrow (100+ miles from me). It would be great to meet up but I doubt it would happen, it's a long way from where you will be starting off from. Keep us posted as I am living this trip vicariously through you.

Mr Cob, wanted to get to meet you in Big Bend area, but trip preps came first.
Then your schedule changed unexpectedly too.

Thank you for the invite to meet you and the IWMA folks. My plans, schedule and routing after Deadhorse are still open. Will keep you posted.

The official ride start was today. Am now on the clock, with Da'mit running like the proverbial sewing machine.:clap:clap:clap

Jon was through here Memorial weekend. He was fed and watered and sent on his way again. Thanks for thinking I cooked breakfast.
