Can You De-Restrict the F700GS?

    I have just bought the F700GS, as it was smaller & suits my size better than the F800GS. However the BMW sales guy said that the 700 has the 800cc engine, but it is restricted to 700cc. He said BMW won't de-restrict it, but he thinks it can be done. Has anyone done it & if so how?

    That's an odd thing for the dealer to say. It is not restricted to 700cc.
    Both bikes are 800cc.
    The "700" is restricted to 75hp. (compared to 85hp for "800")

    You would need cams, throttle bodies, maybe the head, and ecu's.

    There is probably a way, but not easy or cheap. Buy the 800 and put smaller wheels on it.

    If you want to get technical, all the f-twins are "restricted" compared to the f800gt - 90 hp.

    Just to clarify the obvious -- the newer F650GS, F700GS, and F800GS all have the same engine displacement. Power output and torque curves are different due to cams etc. Radiator is smaller in F650GS due to lower peak hp. Fuel requirements also vary. The older F650GS is a single now renamed G650GS. Could anyone make a more screwed up naming system?

    BMW is good at the model nomenclature confusion. They've been doing it on their cars for years... in the past, the last two digits signified engine displacement, so a 328i was a 3-series with a 2.8 liter engine. Now the 328i has a 2.0 liter turbo engine, and a 335i has a 3.0 liter turbo. Go figure.

    Why don't you ride it around some first.
    Wear out the original tires, and THEN figure out what limitations the bike has.
    You may find 75 Horsepower adequate to your purpose.
    If not, $3000 spent on a used GSXR or Ninja could give you a CHEAP fix of what yer missing.

    I know I have an 800cc engine in the F700 & I was told it had been restricted to entice another group of riders to the market. I can't believe BMW would go to the expense of different cams etc when they could restrict it via the ECU.

    If it was just an ECU reflash, it would have been very easy/inexpensive to get it performed aftermarket. BMW obviously doesn't want this to be easy/inexpensive for a potential buyer.

    One guy here have tried it, and it ran like crap, as he put cams from the 8 into the 7..... I think it was.... But you would need cams, ecu, and some say Throttle boddy's. After he posted a video here, where it rand bad, he dropped off. Have not heard from him since. Not a cheap prospect, as the cams, and ecu are pricy.

    The BMW sales guy is an ignorant ass hat, like many of Motorrads finest.
    Go back and have him detail how to do it.
    Why dont you simply take a good hard look at the dyno numbers for the two bikes and pay attention to the rev range you will be riding in? Then, compare the two bikes looking for at least a 7-10% difference.
    One day spent at a decent riding school will likely show you why you dont need the relatively minor difference in hp.
    Your BMW sales guy reminds me of Don Cheadle's character in Boogie Nights.
    The guys in the backroom can make the super turbo X99 modifications for an extra cost...

    Good Advice. Motorcycle Consumer News has dyno charts of rear wheel HP for the F650GS, 700 and 800 in their reviews -- available online for free. If you read the reviews and look at the charts you will see exactly what Mike is talking about. The peak hp goes up with each model but up to a certain rpm the power is the same. The the sprockets are slightly different between the models, which has an effect on acceleration (and highway cruising rpm) but if you want to that can be changed very cheaply. None of them are sportsbikes but they're not slow pokes either.

    Yamaha. I'm pretty sure the R1 has a bigger displacement than 1cc.

    You could go the whole hog and put the husky 900 nuda engine in. Bolt strait in! 100hp.
    Though you would need the NUDA ECU to run it.
    And the motor has a lot more differences. 900cc, slightly offset crank pins so the firing is not quite even. So different crank, cams etc.

    Would be interesting.
    Looks like the husky is the f800gs frame with f800r swingarm. I you had the money, buy a 900 nuda and convert to a GS.

    Not that you need, or can ever use 100hpo in the dirt.

    Thanks for all the info & yes it does sound as though the dealer is an ass. I have to travel 9km on dirt & cross 3 creek crossings from my house before I get to the tarmac (live in far north Queensland) & that is why I have bought the F700 & not a plastic bullet. I have been razzing around on a KTM LC4 Motard for the past 7 years, but wanted something a wee bit more comfortable with a screen & panniers & this ticks all the boxes. I did try the Nuda & boy was it fun, but certainly not a bike I could tour around Australia on.

    No doubt. I am still waiting for their answer to my simple question: what type of oil, mineral or synthetic, are the F700/F800 engines filled with at the factory?

    That is proprietary information, access denied. They are afraid you are an undercover Austrian KTM agent. Mass paranoia in Spandau when a copy of "Stealing Speed" was left in the executive library next to the designer commode.:deal
