I have a "big" GS and wife is not big on off pavement althgough I have suckered fer in to some nice forest trail roads on her old R50/5. Her F650 will be more at home oon the gravel. Thanks for the great job. :clap

Big bikes are OK on all but route 7. Route 2 runs on a railroad grade ORV trail for a while.

With movie "Public Enemies" (some of which shot in WI), there seems to be some renewed interest in the age of gangsters. Many of the Chicago mob spent some time in Wisconsin on various endeavors. Near the Central Rally site are some notable gangster locations in the north woods.

A good read prior to making this loop would be this book:

There are a lot of interesting stories, some of the locals, about gangsters in the north woods. Many locations are mentioned that no longer exist. I have waypointed some that do.

Some of the locations even have visible bullet holes.

    Book is available at Amazon.com.

Here is an overview of the route. If you ride teh whole thing it is about 260 miles.

The .gdb contains the route and the waypoints include the address, phone number, and URL of these sites.

Here is a brief overview of some of the sites.

    Norwood Pines Supper Club
    Gangster dining spot.

    Dillman's Bay Resort
Baby Face Nelson holed up in cabin 5 when on the run from the FBI.
    http://www.norwoodpines.com/

    Little Bohemia Lodge
Site of a shootout between the Dillinger gang and the FBI. Good story. Bullet holes still visible. Artifacts on display. Some of the movie Public Enemies was filmed here.

    Mercer
Al Capone used to hang out here. His brother Ralph ran The Rex Bar for many years (up until the 1970s).

    Hurley WI Silver St District
This place was sin city at one time. The Silver Street district once had 65 bars, prostitution, and Al Capone ran a crime school here.

Barker Lake Lodge and Golf Course
This site, not far from Al's estate, was owned by a Chicago ganster. He used to hide some of his men here when the heat was on. He put in a golf course.
    http://www.barkerlakelodge.com/history.htm

    Herman's Landing Resort
Legend is that a ganster caught the world record musky but since he was on the run he sold it to Louis Spray who registered it as his own.

    The Hideout
Al Capone's estate complete with a gun turret, gun ports, a jail, a lake on which to land bootleg booze from Canada, and the rest.

Obviously there is a lot more to these stories and much of it is available in the book I recommended.

Since the up/downloads don't work, PM me an e-mail address for a GPS file.

Sometimes when people are touring around they try to find some down home cafes to stop for breakfast, lunch, or a cup of coffee and a slice of home made pie.

I compiled a list of mostly notable down home cafes in the vicinity of the rally site.

As always, you can PM me an e-mail address and I'll send you the GPS file.

Added two new dual sport routes that are based out of Eagle River (bringing the total to three DS routes based there).

    Overview of all three.

210 miles Chequamegon - Nicolet National Forest route.

RR Grade route in Michigan - 215 miles with a shortcut option taking it down to 140 miles.

This is a new dual sport track for those who may base out of Eagle River, WI including those who attend the Central ADV Rally. This ride includes tracks for a more dirt oriented path and a route for big bikes that parallels the track but is more street oriented. This track is intended to be ridden as an overnighter. There is a lot to take in along the way. Camping is available at the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula at High Rock Bay. Motels are available in Copper Harbor (along with State Park camping).

Dirt track. Ridden clockwise, it is about 215 miles from Eagle River to the tip and about 201 miles back to the start. You will need a Michigan ORV sticker to ride the ORV trails that are part of this route. That sticker can be purchased on-line at http://www.mdnr-elicense.com/welcome.asp.

Big bike route. The route is 416 miles long and is divided approximately the same as the dirt track as far as daily mileage.

The two together. This is set up so that mixed groups of dirt and big bikes could make the "same" trip and meet up at certain points of interest along the way.

Right now I can't get GPX files to upload, so if you want the track PM me with an e-mail address and I'll send it right out.

    Closer views.
