I'm not sure I'm game to ask... oh, OK.... where are you River Rat? If you are from Coffs Harbour, it'd be a bit too much.

Meanwhile, I've just uploaded a lazy look at the bridge being built across the Mekong, near Pak Lay in Laos. Announced in 2010 for completion late 2013. It seems the builder has done a runner. All the steel is there... a pre-fab from China I believe. We'd just crossed over on the ferry when we decided to take a look.

    Phew... that's a relief.

Here's some bonus photos for you then. I'd been trying to do another video, but I've given up until I get some more memory for this computer. It's got 8 Gb - but it's driving me spare... jerky etc. So, until I get that, I'm looking at some photos I might include in the next one. A mixed aerial (2016) and ground (2012) video.

I'd never really had a look at what I'd taken. I like this little fella

Back when I was trying the Smugmug experiment with videos, I tried to get the Tad Katamtok falls video on here and another forum. I struck problems elsewhere because of the html issue, so went back to just using Youtube for videos and Smugmug for photos. I managed to get it onto Facebook at the time. I just spotted it the other day... it's been shared 40 times with over 2,800 views on FB. Good to see it's out there.

I've put it on Youtube now and added a shot of the Houay Mackchan falls at the end.

When I went through on the bike in 2012, I didn't spot the turnoff for the Tad Katamtok falls - which are only a bit over a kilometre away from the ones I saw. They are on opposite sides of the road - and this time I didn't see the Houay Mackchan falls. One of my bugbears about some of the GPS maps out there. It'd be nice if a bright star flashed on the screen occasionally, so you can spot gems like these falls.

The road is very different now, having been sealed. Back then it was 'orrible thick mud. I was getting a really nasty graunching noise from my front sprocket area... I think from some stones picked up in the mud - or a tooth broken off the sprocket (I got to Siem Reap on that sprocket... but it wasn't going any further).

There's a small village a few km from the falls - maybe 4 or 5 km, and I pulled off the road into it. I don't think they get many visitors. Never seen so many ladies letting it all hang out. Warning... going all Nat Geo for a second here.

The locals gave me some old sump oil for the chain... you can see it all over the ground in the shot above. That worked. No more graunching.

Check out the pair below. I'm sure I got them to smile after taking their photo.... I always show grumps like this the shot.

Tried - and failed - to give this computer the shot in the arm that it needs. Bought 32Gb of RAM... no go. Seems that these motherboards, despite having 4 slots, don't like to have them used. Supposed to be good for 32 MB. Oh well, at least it's up from 8 to 16.

Here's a slight diversion. Yesterday was a bit wet and miserable... damp road for the ride to the 'puter shop, few spits of rain. Come dusk, I noticed the strange light... went outside and it was magnificent. I'm kicking myself now for not flying the drone. Here's a few photos. No colour adjustments btw... it was fabulous as it unfolded.

"Check out the pair below." OMG, you built me up and knocked me down :-)

Beats me why motherboards have 4 memory slots, but you can only use one pair (back on pairs again). Seems to have been that way for quite a while. I must go on a geek course.

Nice sunsets, obviously pollution clearing. Rain yet to come though.

And I hope he is living up to his signature line! "A man should only do the work that is required of him. To do more is a form of greed."

Yeah... sorry guys. Back in Oz, sorting out a few things... have a few irons in the fire but haven't heard anything.

Spent today welding up my damn car... the trogs here were supposed to be driving it while I was away. As if. Parked under a tree, as it always is when I'm away.. a bit of dirt buildup in the boot rain channel... it developed a rust spot... water into the boot, hence into the car, into the electric seat wiring harness... poof. Do you know how hard it is to get an electric seat out when it isn't working?

I've got an absolute huge stack of photos to post from Laos this year... and I'll do it soon. Promise.

I was working on the Funduro last week... chain, sprockets, brakes, spokes, etc, planning on doing the Alpine Rally. Henning is a mate of mine from waaaay back and I'd like to catch up, let alone go to the Rally.... BUT... events have transpired. My middle kid, Pete (who did the Mongol Rally last year) is moving to America in a couple of weeks for work (major solar energy projects). He's chasing his tail getting organised and it now looks like his engagement party is on the Sunday of the long weekend. Pfft goes the Alpine for me.

I've also been fiddling with some old photos that Dad took during the war. During the rain on Saturday, I decided to see how they'd scan and process.... how's this?

He was Provost Corps... despatch rider and all that

    Western Desert

Athens, 1941... Dad in slouch hat, centre of photo

In action on Crete, days before being captured and becoming a PoW for 4 years

Lamia to Brallos Pass, in Greece, on the bikes... a famous action btw... they took out 15 German tanks there and delayed the German invasion by a day, allowing the Allied forces to escape

I think that this may be there, but not sure. As a matter of interest, Dad was directing traffic on the retreat from here and was wounded in a Stuka attack. He got shrapnel in the forehead / temple area... and was knocked out... bleeding profusely... was left for dead. Came to behind enemy lines, got back on his bike, overtook a German column, expecting to be shot... got back to his own lines, evacuated to Greece, then captured. The shrapnel was removed 4 years later in England.

This is him again, rear row, seated, on the right (not the standing guy) in Stalag 383 holiday camp, guest of Adolf.

So... apologies for the delay in updates... but I'll do it soon

Great shots of your father, I'm sure you're very proud, incredible story of his escape. No apologies necessary, was just hoping all was well. Good luck to your son in his new endeavors, solar has really taken off here.

Wow, I can't begin to imagine how scary it would have been to overtake an enemy column on a motorcycle. . He must have been hauling serious ass!

OK, where has Bigfella gone? Back to living a responsible, day to day grind like us mortals? Can it be? Again, hope all is well.

All's good, thanks guys. I should be back to a responsible day to day grind... and I've made a couple of phone calls to that effect, but I'm not yet - too many silly little projects getting in the way - like the concrete path that I just broke up with a sledge and bar today - in preparation for laying concrete, erecting a carport and, at last, my two post car hoist. I probably should get a bit more serious about that proper day to day though.

As a matter of interest, something that popped up this week was one of my videos. It was linked by The Ecologist to an article about the destruction of one of the world's largest inland fisheries. I try to avoid political comments on any of the videos I put up... and The Ecologist didn't contact me... but it's an interesting article, none the less

    http://www.theecologist.org/News/ne...sheries_in_the_world_are_being_destroyed.html

I'll be back soon and do the proper story of what we saw in our 10,000 km around Laos earlier this year.

One snag with posting on YouTube is that people can link to it without reference to the creator and without consideration of the context.

Sorry... plenty to post, but a couple of things. I lost a bit of interest, getting slammed for the second time with the banhammer for posting something that'd offend big bad bikies, but is visible on a daily basis to kids walking past. Sometimes I just 'shakes me head and wonders' as they used to say.

A bit of good news in my inbox today. A photo from Lake Toba of the pig. Sarma, the young lass who was nice to us way back in 2012, keeps in touch via FB these days. There's some language difficulties, but she's polishing up her English. I'm not certain, but I think love may be in the air for her. It's a bit hard in some of these places... the poor bloke has to put together a fair bit of coin to get married. The good news today was the photo she sent me. I'd been worried that they may not have got the concept sorted when we built the pig farm... (an anonymous inmate was most generous to her family)... but the proof's in the pudding, or the bun's in the oven, it seems....

BigFella must be back to the day to day grind, hope all is well... maybe he can pop in and give us an update.
