I have been working with one of my customers on volume issues with the G9.

Just to be clear, the G4 mod has the problem with volume being louder when you use the earbuds. It is a matter of impedance and power required. When the earbuds are used you need to run the master comm volume at a much lower level, almost at the bottom.

This is not really a problem with the G4, it is still usable. The difference you notice is when the master volume goes up to compensate for increase in background noise it goes in steps and when you are at a low volume level the steps seem large.

While you can live with it when using a G4 it gets harder when you are using a G9. The volume output of the G9 is higher than the G4 clamp can provide so as a result, it gets harder to live with at the low volume levels of the main control. Sometimes it can get to the point that when you plug in an MP3 player it may not be able to put out enough volume to get "noticed" by the amplifier and you can't hear it.

The solution is to get some resistance in the output to the earbuds. This can be done in 3 ways, either by installing a 56 ohm resistor on the common leg inside the clamp or by installing an inline volume control. If you install a resistor inside the clamp you can no longer plug the speakers back in and use them, the volume will be cut down and you can't hear it.

A simple solution is to get an inline volume control.

I found a source for some short inline controls that seem to work well and are cheap. I picked up a few of them and will pass them along to anyone who gets an earbud mod done for an additional $8. If you have had a mod done in the past just send me an email and I'll send you one for the same price plus postage.

This is what it looks like:

    HI. Jetgirl.
I have a g9 ordered and want to send them to you to be modified. I am using a set of good westone earbuds and like the sound and noise reduction they give me. As for the mp3 volume issue, is it still a problem when using a bluetooth mp3. I think you are saying it's an earbud issue not a source issue. Also what is your turnaround time?
    Thanks

You are correct about the volume issue. The turn around is 2 workdays usually.

Shoot me an email and I will send you the particulars.

Have you looked into an earbud mod for the Scala src system for the shuberth helmets? If there is a way I'll maybe give my new g9 to my wife and order the src for my schuberth.

I haven't had the chance to get a good look at one yet. It can probably be done but what I will need to figure out is whether there is room for an internal jack or not.

You would have to send it to me in order to find out. Before it is installed in the helmet would be best.

Let me know if you would like to do it.

I'm leaving on a 7k mile around the USA trip on the 1st of Sept. If I get get the SRC system and it won't work I'll have to live with the speaker system on a long, long ride. I 'll call Cardo, maybe the will have an idea whether or not it can be done. I'm sure there is a way. The electronics are the same, just different packaging. IF we can't figure this out I,ll send you my g9 for conversion.
    Thanks for your help

I found out that the SRC system for the Shuberths are based on the g4 not the g9. I don't want the g4 system. I'll E-m you soon for mailing instructions and I'll send you my g9, or you can send instructions to leesoars@aol.com when you get a chance. Hope you didn't spend much time looking at the SRC system. Thanks Lee

I'm kind of curious if you have to worry about this mod should you ride through the rain. Anybody had any issues with this? I have 2 G4s I plan on doing because I am completely unsatisfied with the speakers. I'll probably get some better speakers as well and a nice set of custom earbuds.

Yes. I am still doing them. I have worked out a solution for the new G9 clamp as well. Same prices. Just shoot me an email at eileen.kelleher@gmail.com

I'll look for your email, did you ask for the headphone jack mod?

Can you recommend a particular ear bud that works well for this mod? I'm tired of not hearing my riding buddy well and asking him to repeat himself and want to do the mod if that is still possible.

I use Sony earbuds that I got at Staples... Like 25 bucks, and they seem to block out most of the loud sounds from the road...
