The folks at webbike world have been working on a 3-way review / comparison of Bluetooth bike comm units:

    - Scala Q4
    - Interphone F4
    - Sena SMH-10

They wrote up 2 reports on each device (1 general overview, and 1 ride report), and are about to publish a final comparison between all 3. Check it out if you want some additional details on how (well) these things work:

My G4 works quite well with my Blackberry Storm, which I use to play music (via the built-in mp3 player) as well as to make or receive calls.

If I receive a call my while listening to music, the music will mute and I will hear a jingle. Although I can answer the call by speaking loudly (practically shouting), I find it easier to just reach up and push the top middle button. When the other party hangs up, the music will resume playing.

If I want to make a call, I push the top middle button to activate the voice calling on my BB. I can then just speak the name of the party and it will dial automatically. When the call ends, my music resumes.

Sometimes the music will cut out or fail to resume after a call. I can usually re-start the music if I hold the front side button for 3-4 seconds.

When my wife is riding with me, I typically leave the VOX open and do not use the music player on my BB. As others have noted, voice activating the system can be difficult.

Sometimes while I am connected to my wife via VOX, the unit will start to pick-up static. I can usually eliminate the static by turning the VOX off and then back on.

Which button on the G4 are you using to "sync" your iPhone and G4?

I've got both the Scala G4 and iPhone 4 and they work together just fine. I don't even remember pairing them, so it must not have been anything unusual.

The voice dialing works for me about 1 out of 5 tries - so I just don't call when I'm riding. Answering and talking works fine.

I did the modification to the G4 to replace the speakers with a 3.5mm headphone jack for my Etymotic ER6i's. This gives me great sound quality and wind noise isolation at the same time. I'm considering adding a Digizoid "ZO" subwoofer/amp to see if I can improve the sound quality a bit more.

Note to the OP: Thanks for sharing your experience with the G4.

My wife and I got a set of the G4s this last spring and have been very happy with how they work. I have it paired to an HTC Incredible Droid phone and it works great. The only issues have been a limited range while riding trails in dense forest. That when I know I need to slow down and wait. Battery life has been good, we go for two full days of riding with no charging.

Some say that riding should be solo and quite, why have headsets? Well these have given me peace of mind knowing that I can ride at my pace listen to music, and when I need, point out road hazards, turns, or to deer on the side of the road.

Just upgraded to latest firmware and found that the upgrade software works on Win7 64. Kind of nice that you can also preset the radio stations with the cardo software.

My wife and I have had Q2's for about a year and a half. We recently upgraded to the G4's and put one of the Q2's on our son's helmet. We paired him as "Rider B" on both of our G4's so it will be easy to connect with either of us and that part has worked well. I have a Zumo 665 paired to my G4 that when I am riding solo does all I ever want and more. If I read correctly I should be able to broadcast the Zumo through my G4 to either or both of my riding companions. What combination of buttons do I need to push to share the Zumo output with other units?

Hmm, I don't ever remember reading that as a feature of the G4's? Let me go glance at the manual again.

I just read through the manual and I don't really see this as a possibility at all. For one thing, the GPS take priority over intercom and will cut off your intercom connection if your GPS talks to you or you get a call through your GPS. So there is no way at the same time your GPS is talking to you that you could even upon up a simultaneous connection with someone else and have them hear the audio too.

Also as these paragraphs below state, if you are the person connecting to 2 other radio's (like your wife's G4 & his Q2) at the same time, then technically your phone and/or GPS are temporarily disconnected while those 2 connections are open.

    These paragraph's explain that.
    And here's another one

FYI - Cardo just emailed out a software upgrade to the G4 that adds some useful new features:
What’s new in the scala rider G4 v3.0

    Click-To-Link

Since several hundred thousand bikers are already using the G4, a new and exciting feature has been added to allow for spontaneous intercom connections with any G4 biker within sight: Click-to-Link™. No need for advance pairing or any preparation. Just “Click-to-Link” and create your own roadside social network.

The Click-To-Link feature allows bikers to initiate spontaneous intercom calls to random G4 users who are within range. Users can always activate or deactivate this feature and choose to accept or reject incoming requests for such random connections.

    Volume Per Mode

The Volume Per Mode feature causes the G4 to memorize the most recently stored volume setting for each audio source (A2DP stereo, mobile phone, GPS, FM radio), so that whenever a user switches between modes, the G4 will automatically transmit sound at the previously set volume level.

    Stand Alone A2DP

A dedicated audio channel was added to accommodate A2DP-enabled music devices (such as the iPod Touch 2G/3G/4G). This provides the G4 with parallel connectivity to an MP3 device and a mobile phone, so that users can seamlessly switch from one to the other.

    AGC Calibration

AGC sensitivity levels can now be set according to any user's particular needs (Low, Medium, High) and can be re-adjusted whenever needed. Users can now set the optimal AGC level to accommodate their personal needs and adapt to specific driving conditions, thus avoiding excessive or insufficient AGC responsiveness. Users will set and/or readjust their desired AGC sensitivity levels as needed via the PC software or in the Voice Configuration Menu directly on the G4.

    VOX Calibration

VOX sensitivity levels can now be set according to the user's particular needs (Low, Medium, High) and can be adjusted by the end user whenever needed. The end user will be able to set the optimal VOX level for specific driving habits (lower VOX sensitivity for fast driving, etc. and vice versa) via the PC software or in the Voice Configuration Menu directly on the G4.

    Automatic Radio Tuning

One-Button-Push to search for and temporarily set up to six radio station presets: For users travelling outside their home region. To reactivate their original six station presets after returning to the home region, users just need to turn the unit off and on again.

    Automatic Scan (FM Radio)

Automatically scan for the next available station. If the user finds a station he wants to listen to, one press of a button will stop the Scan before the system continues to automatically search for the next station.

    New Voice Configuration Menu

The new Voice Configuration Menu lets users easily change G4 settings and customize their unit without the need for a computer. The following settings may be configured via the Menu:

    Language
    Enable/Disable Click to Link
    Enable/Disable VOX
    Set VOX sensitivity level
    Set AGC sensitivity level
    Enable/Disable RDS
    Enable/Disable Spoken Status Announcements
… of course you can also choose to configure these settings via the PC software.

^ Wow those are some good updates.

I'll have to inform my Dad who has the G4 and probably help him update it too. :D

Kinda silly, but whats stopping you from pairing more than 3 motorcycles. When you pair 3, one has to be the center for both A and B cycles, so what if B is also a center for 2 communication links. Wouldn that work and make sense?

    so basically you would have:
    A communicating with C
    C communicating with A and B
    B communicating with C and D
    D communicating with E etc.

Just picked up a G4 powerset the other day and am really happy with them so far except that my computer (Win 7 32-bit) won't recognize the units when I plug them into the usb port. I turn them on using the mobile and volume + buttons like it shows in the Update program but there's no "ding" like you get when something is plugged into the computer and it's recognized. I've un/re installed the Cardo Update program several times and keep getting a message that says I dont have Administrator privledges, eventhough I am. Anyone have similar issues or ideas on how to fix this?

Win 7 you probably have to do the "run as administrator"----- it happens quite a bit.

That would probably work but I don't think you'd be able to have a group chat. Never tried it because I don't know that many people with headsets.

Has anyone had any luck trying to pair the Sony Dongle (TMR-BT10A) to a Scala G4? HAD LUCK THE WHOLE TIME, JUST DIDN'T KNOW HOW TO WORK IT. ONCE IT PAIRS YOU MUST HOLD THE A/MP3 BUTTON FOR 2 BEEPS THEN THE XM KICKS IN
I'm trying to use this to bluetooth XM radio from my Zumo 550 to my G4. Last season I used my G4 to intercom with my lady (on her own bike)& paired it with my Zumo (which was paired to my 3G iPhone).
I was able to talk to her, listen to GPS, listen to music (I have a SD card w music in the Zumo) & make n take phone calls.(loved it all year)
NOW XM WORKS GREAT, GPS INTERRUPTS & MUSIC RETURNS AUTO, HAVEN'T USED INTERCOM YET, BUT CAN'T SEEM TO USE THE PHONE THRU THE ZUMO BLUETOOTH WHILE PAIRED WITH THE DONGLE

This year I'm looking to lose the SD card (as it takes too long to load each time & leaves me with nothing for up to 40mins sometimes) & bluetooth XM radio thru the Zumo 3.5mm output with the Sony dongle. It's A2DP & I've read about others using this method, but can't seem to get it to pair.STILL WANT TO LOSE THE SD CARD, OR AT LEAST GET A MUCH SMALLER ONE, BUT DON'T KNOW IF I'M GOING TO GIVE UP PHONE CALLS AS BAD AS THAT SOUNDS. I'M HOPING TO FIND AWAY TO HAVE THE G4 PAIRED TO BOTH & SWITCH BACK & FORTH AS NEEDED

When I have the dongle in pair mode (lights flashing) & hold the Mobil button on the G4 until lights indicate pairing, the lights tell me right away that they've paired (both stop flashing both colors & start to flash normal). But I don't get any music to come thru. Now if I turn the dongle off, when I re start it, it flashes as if it's never been paired b4 & this is where I'm lost.AFTER IT PAIRS, HOLD THE A/MP3 BUTTON FOR 2 BEEPS, SECONDS LATER THE DONGLE AUDIO COMES THRU LOUD N CLEAR & STAYS PAIRED AFTER RESTART

I haven't updated the G4 yet (does anyone know if this works on a Mac?), but the roadside quick connect to other users sounds great. STILL HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO UPDATE ON MAC

Any help or pointers will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks, Craig
