I've been lurking around this site enjoying all the RRs; it's time I contribute one.

Back in December, I had this itch to get down to the Carrizo Plains National Monument for a little solo camping and riding. The problem was, that I had only 2 days, and it's a 5 hour drive each way to or from my home in the Bay Area. Not enough time to ride down there, so loaded my old green KLR on my trailer, and took off.

By the time I got there, it was late afternoon, and when I arrived at KCL Campground, I was the only one there!

I set up camp. It was dark by then and I sat under a spectacular Milky Way sky. Two shooting stars streaked across the scene. Off in the east, I could see the glow of the town of Taft behind the Trembler Range.

Coyotes yipped and howled, not far away. I heard wings swoosh over my head but could not see anything in the dark sky.

And, I thought, I'm glad there is a place like this.

    Next morning...

    Makin' breakfast..

Time to ride! The old Traver ranch house can be seen in the background. People lived there in the 70's but now, it a home to bats.

Here's the Trembler Range, which runs along the east side of the Carrizo Plains. The San Andreras Fault runs along the base of the Trembler Range.

I turned off the Soda Lake Road and headed up into the hills toward Padrone Canyon. I found this sweet little road...note to self...good spot for dispersed camping next time. This view is looking toward the north...

...and this view is looking over the Plain toward the Tremblers to the east.

I kept climbing and was headed toward the ridge of the Caliente Range

when it happened...broken clutch cable. :cry

Not to worry, I carry a spare, but I decided it would be easier to swap the cable back at KCL Camp, where I have more tools (and some cold beer). So I rode back to camp with no clutch.

Back at KCL, cable's fixed, and it's 62 degrees!

    More scenes from Carrizo...

This shot was taken just outside the Carrizo Plains, at the intersection of Soda Lake Road and Highway 166, looking to the north.

    Caught this guy in flight...

Now, the sun's behind the Caliente Range and it will be dark soon. Time to start my 5 hour drive back home.

On the day I had the Carrizo Plains all to myself....
