I've carried a straight shaft weed wacker many times. Powerhead on rear seat using 4 thick rubber straps (bungies) and let it hang off the back.

I have a Garrett Ace 250 and it breaks down into a nice packable size. The coil comes off and the pole breaks down. Everything should fit into a dry bag. I think most detectors break down too.
Though I don't carry mine on the bike (yet) I don't see a problem with the size.

Thanks Jon thats just the sort of info I was after. :D I have been researching the old settlements and gold fields around my area and thought it might be fun to give a metal detector a try. I have fond memory's of going over the American WW2 camps with my farther around his place when I was a kid.

I have a Minelab Sovereign. It will break down enough to fit in a Concours bag, but I don't do that very often. I usually take the car.
I keep it mostly assembled, in a double shotgun case (Walmart...$8.00).
I have strapped it to an ATV abunch of times for in-the-woods detecting.
