Luke. It was good meeting you and your crew in Mexicali, and starting with you heads up on top of Laguna Salada (I'm the guy on #42 - the 1983 XR500R). I was sad to hear of your blown motor on the transit - Baja has a way of ruining bikes.
... I should know... blew up 3 bikes in Baja in 2011. HAHA!
Anyways, I agree with your comment above - doubt I'll be going back to NORRA next as well. It was fun, but there's something about NORRA that attracts rich "bucket lister a-holes" who are out to make a name for themselves, before they die... Without any care about anyone else except themselves.
I actually had the displeasure of racing with one of these guys in the past (Truck class). He cared very little about the bikes he passed (or anyone else for that matter) - they were just in his way. I couldn't believe it. Idiot!
Another bike racer said it best, "I feel safer at a SCORE race."
Hopefully NORRA figures it out - they definitely deserve to be known as the happiest race on earth.

The CBRZ-650 is gradually being brought back to life. A donor 650 gave up it's motor, as well as wiring harness.
Motor is in, wiring harness being adapted;
Stock handlebar switches with all the appropriate "doodads";
The smile has returned;
Very cool, hopefully it will be ready for Hells Canyon
Hells Canyon, that's the plan. Only two weeks to go.
So a little update. The motor is a regular 650 motor and the Dyna ignition doesn't want to work with it, so I decided to use the ignition that came with the motor. That in turn means using all of the wiring that came with it too. So it's basically a 100% rewire. Fortunately the wiring I got is in excellent shape, and complete, so it will be a fairly easy job. I did about half of it in a day. Most of that was removing the old wiring and digging through the boxes to find the new parts. The only custom work I've done so far is modify the battery box to take the AGM battery that I have now. The stock 650 battery is an odd shape and there is no AGM that I could find that fit it. Having a spillable battery in a dirt bike is not appealing.
With Lady Bug's Hells Canyon Rally only a week away, Luke's begun thrashing in earnest.
Wiring harness nearly completed;
Luke fabricated a nifty bracket for the stock coil pack;
Rebuilt battery box and AGM battery can be seen nestled behind air cleaner;
Pipes going on, won't be long til she comes back to life;
Been following this build quietly... Would LOVE to have one of these someday... Nice work!
Awesome Luke! Also curious how the factory CB650 transmission ratios will compare with the CB650/550 hybrid gear-set...

Well, I was on the fence.... or not so much on the fence as in the shop. Now that the bike is running I'm IN.
So yes, I got it running today. The donor motor needed some work. It looked good on the outside but had been sitting with the carbs and exhaust off for who-knows-how-long, so I pulled the top end to make sure there wasn't any junk in there. There was. Nothing that had fallen in, but a whole lot of carbon build up. I think the bike was sucking oil from the breather. There were big oily flakes half-stuck to the pistons. After cleaning it up it looked good though, so I put it back together with a new head gasket. Set the valves, changed the oil (yuck), and fired it up. Everything seems to work ok, it runs well, shifts through the gears and the clutch works. There's a little more wiring to do to get the lights working with the new harness, but other than that it should be set.
If I can offer some advice:
1: Do it.
2: Start with a running bike.

Luke continues his efforts to make the CBRZ-650 road friendly, yesterday adding a headlight with some nice little touches. Expect this to be an evolving project.

So the bike is together again, and pretty much ready to go.
The headlight is just a regular 7" reflector pinned to a piece of cutting board. I like how it turned out, but may replace the plastic with white instead of the translucent. The light isn't as good as the fog light I had on before, but it's really just for looks and daytime visibility.
The mousse in the front tire had to go, 15psi is really squirmy in a front tire on pavement. At least that's what I thought. After the test ride today it seems that the knobs are doing as much squirming as the rest of the tire. Oh well. It's rideable, just annoying.
Pulling the mousse. I use a vice for mounting and removing them. I have a pretty easy time with it, and find it almost impossible without it.
Installing the tube. Much nicer to do in a shop than on the road.
I took a 50 mile test ride, and aside from the tires everything went just fine.
Are those soft non DOT OR A FIRMER DOT knob your running???
They're DOT, Pirelli Scorpion Rally Somethings. The knobs are as tall as they are wide, so they flex a bunch. I can pull them over a half inch or so with my finger.
I shouldn't be too surprised, they worked really well off road, so...
