Cedar City Utah to Tonopah, Nv

    Looks like there are two routes
    Via Caliente on Ut56 then NV318 to 93

    or

    via Mesquite to Nv 168 to 93

    is either more interesting or better road surface?

    Caliente keeps you off the freeway, so that's the way I usually go.

    I'm sure it's 319 in Nevada.

    You could take 56 east then after Newcastle 18 south to Enterprise. Not many people go that way through the Dixie National Forest. I'd stay on 18 through Central but at Veyo head for Gunlock. (Gunlock State Park). On to Shivwits.....stay south and dip in to Arizona.....pick up the 15 south to Mesquite then back north up to the Extraterrestial (375) and you'll be the first in your gang to do that loop.

    For added bonus points you could take the 169 loop after Mesquite through Valley of Fire State Park past Logan and Overton, you are so close why not?, and the added bonus points will look grand on your resume. I'm pretty certain Arizona gets you one or two bonus points alone.

    318 is pretty cool but it's an odd way. I was born and raised in Preston, Lancashire, England UK....so 318 to Preston was a must do for me. If you do go up there Ely is kinda cool in a Nevada sort of way.

    Yeah, there are few routes you can choose from. There MIGHT have been a couple of "little rides" that have passed over this territory in the past couple of years.

    I might suggest marking you map with gas stops and then linking those spots together to match you range. Google earth will give you lots of off-asphalt options if you can handle the remoteness.

    caliente route is nice if you have time for a couple stops and quick detours.

    cathedral gorge is neat to see.
    pahranagat wildlife area is cool.

    a neat camping spot is right where the 318 and 375 split, its a rest area with a couple big trees and picnic table.

    Through Caliente is way shorter, and the road surface is fine. It's Nevada.. not a lot to see out there. Lots of straight roads after you leave Caliente. It's a long way from Caliente to Tonopah, about 190 miles. There's no commercial gas in Rachel. If you can't make that (don't push it..strong winds come up out there and can drop your mileage), consider riding the 12 miles or so down to Alamo on Hwy 93 to top off. That will give you an extra 30 or so miles of 'cushion'. Or take an extra gallon with you from Caliente.

    If you do go through Caliente keep the speed down in the area. Every time I've been through there I've picked up a patrol car about a mile outside of town and they've followed me for about a mile on the other side. :dunno Seems like a nice little town and I'd like to stop some day but so far I haven't felt too welcome. :lol3

    I am crossing Nv down there to get to Ca near Yosemite and from there to head north.

    I kind want to say I've been around Area 51. I will carry about 1.5 gallons of gas with me, but all the advice re winds and mileage and paucity of stations is well-taken. !2mi to Alamo is probably a worthwhile detour. !90 miles is close to the limit of my tank when completely full, esp if headwinds and speed.

    I thought Cathedral Gorge looked interesting and that's what drew me to crossing via Cedar City--or from St George up 18 the across-- rather than 15 down to 168.
    I am going to be on a BMW roadster--600+# loaded-- so I really prefer pavement, but some hard packed graded mud/gravel is ok in a pinch. Point is, the area is of interest to me, but there is a lot farther to travel on this ride. Lots farther. There will not be a lot of time for exploring in this area.

    So, to distill my question down a little more: which is the neater ride? The Caliente route or the Mesquite route in your view?

    I'm looking at google and I see a road that goes off to the right after Caliente, looks like packed gravel, but it is not labeled. It eventually hooks up with Klondike road whch links back up to 93.
    Where Klondike links it looks like dual track. Am I looking at the right roads?

    I will prob not be up for that adventure if I am looking at the right roads. :1drink

    I'd go Caliente only because it is less freeway and less miles.

    Finally shaping up, more or less firm.
    Leaving Monday 5/13 and I hope the roadster is reliable. You do EVERYTHING you can to prepare and at some point just have to cross your fingers. Carrying gas because in addition to the scarcity of gas stations, my fuel gauge could be flakey--have the fuel strip that has plagued so many BMWs over the years. Yes. I'm using the odometer.

    +1. I take that route at least once per year, sometimes more frequently. It's the best way to get across Nevada mid state to mid-state California.

    Be mindful of the Sierra passes though., if you plan to keep going West to California. Check here to see if your chosen route is even open. We had snow this week, and that could affect your route once you get to 395.

    I have an all dirt route. We ran KOTW on it last time. Cedar City to Caliente to Tonopah. Two days of hard riding.

    thanks Notmy, but I'm looking for pavement. Big heavy roadster. Always wanted to do dirt, but never have. Never had the op. And our "dirt" is swamp. However our streets are off road if that counts:eek1

    Deserts in the West are a whole new thing. You'd be surprised what a street bike/car can navigate out here, just ask Charlie Manson. However, if the shit hits the fan out there, you best be prepared.
