    Up. And to the right.
Kyocera Air, OSM+, Ram Mount, 3BR cable. About $100 total. I have global maps, Spotify for wireless music, can connect to wi-fi, doesn't require cell service to navigate, I can install whatever apps I want, and keeps a 100% charge while is operation.

I did dl maps on the GPS, not mobile phone and had paper maps. I didn't dl maps of where I was going on the phone due to lapse of memory before leaving for the trail. Also had GPS and maps as back-up, which I ended up having to use.

You are correct on point 3, to the degree that there are 2-ways: 1.) upload maps to phone, use only with connectivity. That is what I typically do, route the map and then follow.2.) DL offline maps, i only do that on GPS, not phone, personal preference.

yup, there are much better applications for mapping offline. Google maps is like a proof of concept compared to full on offline mapping possibilities. I see a lot of people that say "it won't work out there" gesturing towards the forest... but when I ask why they're comparing an online application without downloaded maps, to an offline GPS... they usually go quiet. compare offline to offline , and it becomes apparent that either will work, but one of them has more capabilities in the online environment.... real time traffic, real time weather, etc
