The Bunkhouse in Clifton has always been a good BBQ joint. It is in danger of becoming a damn good BBQ joint. Some days. Today is one of those days .

Ok, folks this is the old Mills County BBQ place and it is still pretty durn good Q!
They have expanded the dining area since my last visit and now has porch dining area.
Brisket:This was top shelf AGAIN! It was tender, juicy, smoked just right. Seasoning was good.....LEt's say a solid 9
RIBS: Ribs were pretty good though not as meaty as Loco. Flavor good, and still tender being late in the day.............7
SAUSAGESausage was OK, but not something special....5

I saw another customer with a mesquite grilled ribeye that looked real good and will be going back to try that again. Also, I really enjoyed the home made fried jalapenos:freaky Noticed on way out that they have jalapeno sausage and will try that next time.

I have noticed that there are several folks from out of state that comment on this thread. I think we need to put the addresses on these places we find so that the "out of towners" can find these great eat'in places.

Lockhart has suffered in the quality department in recent years. Names like Kreuz MArket, Smitty's and Blacks all were once synonymous with great Q....sadly...they tend to rest on yesterdays laurels:cry

Black's has come back a bit in the last few (5) years...sadly the others have indeed subsided.

I just stopped at Gradys BBQ on the north side of SA for lunch. The ribs and brisket were good. The sausage was ok. The po salad and cream corn were soso but then no corn can hold a candle to Rudys. The whole shebang cost just $11.50 with a drink. Not bad. They gave me a seniors discount without me even asking for it. It must be more obvious than I thought? :gerg

Rib and one side special. Added a sausage for grins. Cherry cobbler, no pie but will do in a pinch. Beans were good with nice chunks of sausage. Sauce ok. Ribs....had better but I've had worse. Price was $14. A nice meal.

Not Corpus but there are four places that I can think of in Rockport/Fulton. I've been to Stevie Lews and Macs. I thought both were good. There is a new place called Hatfields that I haven't been to yet. Its gotten good reviews. There is also a roadside BBQ in Rockport that I've stopped at but its been a long time ago and I don't remember if it was good or not? On the way to Corpus is Vans BBQ just off 37 at the Oakville exit. Its always been one of my favorites.

As fate would have it, my wife's Birthday happens to fall on a day I will be hopefully be visiting with inmates. Given this transgression, a trip to sample TX BBQ is probably my only hope of a hall pass with a clear conscience. I'm thinking either Coopers in Llano or Opies in Spicewood, as I'd really like her to finally see a bit of the hill country so she might get interested in riding her bike again :-)

Any recommendations on which to hit? Perhaps another?

If you go to Coopers go to Llano. And if you go to Llano get the porkchop. But I wouldn't go to Cooper's. I'd take her for steak in Castell. That's Texas . ;) And 152 is sweet.

See post #1005. Nice paved and easy dirt roads around Goldthwaite. Take her out to ride Regency Bridge then hit the Q.

Had a salad for lunch. Well. A meat salad. Hey. There's pickles and onions. "Salad".

"Hill Country side of the road BBQ" in whereverthefuckIwas, Texas. No idea but I was on Hwy 6 between Houston and Hearne . Hill Country was the name. Decent atmosphere, cantankerous honky Tonk owner man. That's always a plus. ;) Average brisket. Ribs a 6.5-7 Good beans. Average tater salad.
