Rode from grant grove to mill wood yesterday afternoon. The forest people have done a fantastic job on the roads up there. I was afraid it was all over for the area. IMG_0189.JPG

IMG_0183.JPG Even the shay trail is fixed. The wash berms are packed nice and peaky, it's like a motocross track in that section. When I got to the creek I realized I was dangerously low on gas. I had enough to get back to Wilsonia but that would be all the riding for the weekend. I headed for mill wood hoping there would be someone I could buy a little gas from and found a friendly family there. They graciously gave me a gallon (thanks!). I then rode another loop down through the creek crossing and up to Brian's bee location. Then towards the heliport but took that trail that goes down to 180. It looks like they are discouraging its use so I left it alone. By then the sun was setting and getting cold so I hauled ass back up the hill just in time to load and drink a beer before I left.
Riding is fantastic right now. I know you shouldn't ride alone but I sure had a great afternoon and met some nice people.

Downstream from millwood. From looking at the picture it doesn't look anything like it used to. Before it was 50 to 60 feet across with the north side about 18" deep with boulders hidden in it. They really tamed it.

Wow, yeah they messed that one up good! I liked the way it was before, much more challenging....now you can drive a honda civic across it.

EDIT: maybe it's not the same one I was thinking of

This one is downstream of millwood on Mill Creek...at the 40sec mark

I rode mountain bike from Buck Rock to Hume behind the gates through camp 7 earlier this year. They did the same thing back there, you could drive a Prius through now. The slide that kept everyone out was cleared and all the rocky sections were flattened and smoothed.

So that road is open now? I was up there in August and the gate was closed where the trail/road connects into 10-mile Rd just above Hume.

So did you ride the DR up the elevator trail? I've only been down it and watch Curtis go up it...

I'm pretty sure I know that mudhole. When we rode up there about 2 months ago I was in the lead with Adrian right on my tail and he got a little muddy when I hit that spot. The whole front of his bike and him were black. :rofl

Gates are still closed, I was told they would be opened in spring. We rode through on bicycles.

Yup same creek crossing. They used to grade the roads occasionally and groom them. It's been a loooong time since they have had a little love. They probably won't touch them again for 20 years so just enjoy it for now. I'm sure they will get more challenging from here on. If you had the job of road maintenance you would do your best and I'm sure that's what they did.

The forest service is spending their fire allowance on diesel....lol
Has anyone checked out Verplank since the fire? I went down Davis Flat road in July, they were working that road over hard, fixing water crossings and grading.
