Perth to Cervantes sand weekend 2nd & 3rd April

I organised this ride weekend as a SAND weekend, and we certainly got our fair share!!

We had six starters meeting at the Gnangara Pines, about 30 minutes North of Perth:

Dan (me) - KTM 640 Adventure
    Graeme - KTM 640 Adventure
    Nic - KTM 690
    Howard - BMW 650 X-Challenge
    Kev - Husky 610
    Greg - Suzuki DRZ 250

We headed off up through the the pines, and after a few interesting whooped and rutted secondary tracks, shot up to this lookout.....

(the little 250 strutting its stuff in front of the big boys!!)

Howard (top rider) next to his beemer chewing the fat with fellow (top rider) Kev......

We then made our way past the RAAF base/firing range to the next section of pines, and had to tackle a very, very soft section of track which was very wide, but sucked the life out of the big singles.....

Not to mention the poor 250 which Greg had to paddle for 400m because it didn't have the balls to pull 2nd gear!!! Lucky Greg has long legs..... :rofl

Another 15km up the road, we had a small KTM 690 issue..... :shog

No, it wasn't a scheduled service.....

It was a terminal electrical fault :eek1 :deal

It had spark, it cranked, and fired with some fuel down hole, but failed to start up when cranked over. Fuel pump was charging up (we could hear it). Not sure what the issue was. May hear in the next few days.

All good, we were only an hour or so from home, so Nic shot back to his on my bike and brought his trailer (c/w my 640) back, and took the problematic bike home.

I met the boys up at the Lancelin sand dunes a couple of hours later. Howard.....

Cummon Graeme, you can give it more berries than that..... :evil

Honestly, why would you get stuck in front of me while holding camera :lol3

We headed up the beach, taking some inland tracks through the dunes.....

It was hot up here, especially out of the wind. Some parts of the beach were quite narrow.....

And other sections were wicked fun. Grinning ear to ear in our helmets riding these sections.....

The crew, L to R: Howard, Kev, Greg, Graeme and me.....

In some sections the beach was just so narrow we had to head inland and follow the inter-dune tracks until we shot back out onto the beach.....

Greg giving the 250 a hand full to get through the powder.....

Another section, Howard makes it look all too easy on the silky-smooth X-challenge......

Missing a few photos between here and Cervantes. We camped the night, ate, drank and we were generally very (VERY) merry and then slept :freaky

The next morning we were up nice and early, as we were meeting Andrew (WILMO) down at Wedge. After packing up and treating ourselves to some toasted bacon sandwiches, we high-tailed it down the coast. Kev peeled off, as he had to be back in Perth by mid afternoon.

A bit of fun on the beach front (yours truly).....

Waiting down at Wedge after a really fun run down through Grey.....

We meet Wilmo on the big Tenere (Andrew is a also a top rider, and will make this Ten go wherever he wants to point it!! :clap).....

I was leading, and as we headed south of the firing range, and past the watch tower, the beach started to get narrow. There were some kids in 4WD's stuck really badly on the narrow section of the beach. I nailed it past them, hugging the high side of the beach/dune but Graeme lost his pace, and stopped, causing havoc for both him and Wilmo......

(thats my tyre track up to the right!!)

You can see an old 45 series Cruiser, which was bogged down to the axles, and behind it were two 80 series wagons, both bogged down to the running boards. The waves were splashing up against everyone, including the boy's bikes!! :deal

All good though..... a team effort of pushing, a few laughs, a huge amount of huffing and puffing and both bikes were off the steep soft section of beach front.

Wilmo up in the dunes near Lancelin.....

My 640 with Graeme and Greg in the background.....

Howard and Wilmo. While neither bike has the suspension of the 640 I would have either motor any day. Very smooth and great torque from both of these bikes (almost identical motors).....

But if you wanna have some serious fun at a faster pace...... :evil :clap

OR..... if you fancy some serious fun with 40 of your mates, try this...... :eek1

Very cool, but a far cry from the economical, fun factor that the bikes provided for us last weekend!!

Everyone had fun, and made it home in one piece (including 690 on trailer)

Thanks to all for a top time.

Mate I am so jealous it kills me... One to abe able to ride the fantastic coast you are allowed to ride on and secondly to be have the skill to do it. I'm an ex Kiwi and really miss being able to ride the beach and dunes.... The nanny state almost wont let me off the tramac... vic..

Bloody awesome ride reports each time... Congrat's you really know how to put a RR together and have pics that make people drool.

Nice RR Dan, in spite of your Orange colored glasses!
Hope you're enjoying your X Howard. Did you have any temp issues in the sand?

No issues, but the fan was on for more of the time than I have heard it before. That was in part due to the fact that we stopped a lot especially on the way up there and never really got many good quick runs to let it cool down. On the way back, we made better progress and the fan rarely came on.
Some of the beach was extremely soft and would cause anything to heat up a bit.

And yes, I am enjoying the bike. Especially on that run because it never threw me off.
