Changing Spark Plugs on a 2007 990ADV

    I got my air filter out of my 2007 990ADV and would like to change my spark plugs as well. Can that be done without removing the tanks? I have only changed the plugs once while I was checking the valves and I can't remember what all has to come off. If it don't have to take much off to access the plugs with the filter out, I will change them now, otherwise, I will wait till I check the valves again. Thanks! :D

    I'm not sure if you can change out both plugs without removing the tanks. That's why I use NGK DCPR8EIX Iridium plugs on my '08, and change them out when I check the valves. Also, these plugs are available from Rock Auto.

    How often do you change the Iridium plugs?

    I just changed them out this past weekend after 12,000 miles and they looked good, I'm sure they could have gone many more miles. But, I already had the replacements on hand, so I just changed them.

    Realistically, you need to take the tanks off. The rear comes out pretty easily. The front is pure hell. I find the easiest way to get it out is to remove the radiator for easy access. Otherwise, you are fighting space issues all the way.

    BTW, I went ahead and changed the air filter at 20,315 miles, but it did not look dirty at all!

    Not sure if the 990 is the same as the 950,,,, but I can get the front plug out of my 950 Adv without too much drama. Thin wall spark plug socket (I just use a standard deep socket), short 3" extension, universal and a long 9" or so extension. Easy peasy.

    I just did it on my '08 and as you said, the back spark plug was easy but the front was a bit more complicated. I did not removed the right tank, only the left one. I disconnected the radiator, whose, and moved it toward the front wheel. It gave me enough space to remove the plug. One thin I found out is that the 08 plugs are different than 2010 990. We worked on two bikes simultaneously and the sockets were different as well. I used a spark plug socket from a Yamaha 400 dirt bike.

    I changed my plugs when both tanks were already off and it was difficult at best, especially the front.

    Last weekend I pulled the throttle bodies off and the air box out and the front plug is right there ready for the changing...

    I had changed my plugs at 10,000 miles when I checked the valves. I will recheck them again in the next 5,000 to 10,000 miles and will change the plugs at that time. I just ordered the Iridium Spark plugs. I have a new pair of standard plugs, but assuming my valves are holding steady on the next check, I probably won't check them for another 30,000 miles.
