Well, the weather is not appearing to cooperate with my plans to do some moto-camping this weekend. Might even see some snow up in the NC mountains! So I am going to do a slab ride instead. I'll be riding to Nashville to watch a hockey game (my NY Islanders will be in town). It will be cold and rainy - a good test for my heated gloves and waterproof, insulated gear.

BTW, @cyclingkk and I had a great time riding the dirt roads in Uwharrie this past Sunday. We even ventured a little ways onto one of the trails (sort of by accident), and I made my poor KLR do some jumps - which it handled admirably. It was super dry and dusty, but the weather was fantastic and the riding was spirited and fun.

@maffud I can’t wait for our next adventure in the coming weeks...You rode that KLR as it was meant to be ridden. Many thanks for the spirited ride! I hope your ride home today is as dry as the radar indicates.

Hey guys and gals! Long time no speaka! Well I have gotten rid of my dirt scooter and why I haven't been on here lately, only doing sport bike street rides.........anyhow, I got a crazy idea and this is the first iteration and wanted to know how the moto world felt about it...........I thought about making all kinds of these and this was only a 30 minute rough draft to get an idea if it would even work. Please let me know what you think and don't be bashful, give it to me straight!

    Thanks! BOIKE

    Thanks, Keith!
It turns out that the weather was not as dry a I had hoped, although it was definitely better on the way back than it was the day before on the way out there.

I hit lots of snow flurries (no accumulation) and mixed snow and rain in the mountains on the way back. It was right around freezing until I got back to level ground.

My First Gear heated gloves, which are labeled as "waterproof," are, sadly, not so waterproof. They soaked right through, and needed to be dried in front of a fan overnight, and they still were not completely dry the next morning. I may try to treat them with some leather waterproofing product, but it was really frustrating to have that happen. Fortunately I had also brought my insulated rain gloves as a backup, and they kept my hands surprisingly warm in the 45F weather.

I also learned that I need to replace some of the built-in insulation that I've lost this year with some artificial insulation. I may have to finally invest in a heated jacket liner. I wore 4 layers of shirts under my insulated winter riding jacket, including a fleece pullover, and I was still too cold.

On the bright side, my Islanders kicked the Predators' butt 6-2, and that arena and the whole city of Nashville are fantastic!

I was looking for an update on the status of Maple Sally road out of Collettesville. I rode it in late July and there was a tree down across it. Not sure i could get an 1100 under the trunk to pass. It was about 7 miles from the north end near SR 90. Anybody happen to know if it has been cleared?

    Thx

It was fine two weeks ago.

Rode up Maple Sally, Schoolhouse Ridge (gates open) down through Edgemont then up Roseboro Rd to Old House Gap (192) then up and out Edgemont road again to 221 and the BRP.

It appears that weather will be good on Sunday. Probably do a quick loop, catch lunch and ride back to Charlotte. Thinking about riding Old 18, 181, Table Rock Rd., National Forest Rd., Loop back to 181 and head back to Charlotte. I will be riding my Vee 1K. If anyone wants to join up, I will be at the Quick Trip off I-85S and 321 N probably around 9:30am.

Sounds like a great ride, Jon. Hope you enjoy it. I'd love to go along, but I have to coach a couple of hockey games tomorrow. No riding for me this weekend, except for a possible short one tomorrow in the late afternoon.

I'll keep an eye out for you Jon. I plan to do a Mt. Mitchell loop tomorrow if the weather turns out close to what's forecast. I usually take back roads to Old 18, then slab to Marion and go up 80 to the south toe river road. Take that to the BRP and Mt. Mitchell and then come back down to Marion on Curtis Creek. Etc.. I'm on a black Tenere

Dan, I know what you mean as I've been trying to find time to ride last few weekends but.... Still raining here in Matthews. JR, I will be on a silver/black Vstrom 1K.

If you made one using a gas tank from a trials bike, there wouldn't be enough space for the letter carrier to leave so many bills. :D

Might be more cost effective to make an adhesive wrap with the color/graphics of various bike's gas tanks to cover a traditional mailbox. Of course you'd have to work out licensing agreements with each manufacturer.

It has been a while! Stop by Hawthorne's some time. We won't hold your sport bike squidness against you.

    Just got back.

Almost turned around to go back home three times.

Once when I woke up to start prepping for the ride. It was drizzling slightly and roads were wet. I thought about just shutting the garage door and going back to bed.

Second time, as I was heading toward Gastonia and 321, it was now raining and it was starting to get foggy. Told myself that I would make it to the Quik Trip on 321N and turnaround after a break. No one showed, so I decided to check out old 18 to Morganton.

Old 18 was wet and some areas strewn with wet leaves in the curves. Got to practice my wet weather riding somewhat. Due to fog and light drizzle, the roads were empty- old 18 and 181. That was fun.

As I got to 181, the fog had now definitely reduced visibility and the light drizzle was now constant. Just practiced being smooth and had a good time. Hardly any cars on the road.

Got to Table Rock Rd., I was hesitant at first because of the rain but the road/trail was tacky and offered surprising grip even on my big Vee 1K. No dust, just traction and hauling ass on the fire road. The big Vee just grunting mass amounts of torque from one corner to the next.

Turned off on National Forest Rd., and rode down to 181 to I-40 to 321 S and headed home.

I am glad that I kept going because the Table Rock and National Forest Rd., made it all worthwhile.

I will post the gps tracks tomorrow for anyone wanting to ride a quick mix of curves and fire roads/trail from Charlotte. I think I left Matthews at 9:20am and made it back home by 3:00pm.

Thanks there Numa! I will have to do that. So lack of many responses let’s me know there wouldn’t be many people interested if I made them and cut them myself....the wrap is a good idea but I don’t really want tot mess with licensing agreements etc.....anyhow I am sure my neighbors are pleased!

Last minute ride option: I am looking to head toward the mountains tomorrow. A quick grab of a tag on the way, and then 1 of 2 options:
    1) all paved roads around Little Switzerland and surrounding area.
    2) Forest roads like Maple Sally, Table Mesa, or whatever.

If you want to join me, or if you are already planning another ride and want to invite me along, send me a PM. I always prefer to ride with someone else than alone. Weather should be pretty nice tomorrow.

I’d join you but the VSTROM is at the shop awaiting a new ECU. Anyone want to ride off-road at Brushy tomorrow? I’ll be there at 9 am.
