Waiting for another clue
Its taken three attempts to post this message.
"Browns Gap and the turnpike were used briefly during the Civil War. On May 2, 1862, at the beginning of his Valley Campaign, Stonewall Jackson marched his entire army through Browns Gap. From June 9 to June 12, after the Battle of Port Republic at the end of the Valley Campaign, Jackson's army camped in and near Browns Gap.
On September 25, 1864, General Jubal Early and his army, after their defeat at Winchester, fortified themselves here and fought off Sheridan's attacks for two days while awaiting reinforcements.
The turnpike is now a park fire road. On the west it's Madison Run fire road; it descends five miles to the park boundary, where it becomes SR 663. The lower end of the Madison Run hollow is worth exploring (experienced hikers only). On the east, the Browns Gap fire road goes a little more than three miles to the park boundary, where it becomes SR 629."
This together with the earlier posts should answer any questions.
Much better...in a round about way. I've got the spot.
Can't wait until one of us grab so I can tell you all our mistake ... We are down a bike so maybe we will head out two up on my little dr and try to race you to it in the morning ;-)
Well, now that you put it that way it all makes sense! Seriously Wish I'd a figured that out yesterday when I rode out to Crozet from Greene!!!
Hmm, how early am I willing to get up tomorrow before work? Yeah, work on a Sunday, bleck!. It would make 3 different tags in 3 consecutive days though. That'd be sweet.
Didn't get up in time. See do is still up for grabs.
But how early is early? That is the question.
Apparently 12:00 noon is early enough. After two weeks high up on browns gap turnpike off rt 810 near Crozet see do is ready to get a move on!
Looking for new tag spot now.
Oh and this road was rough. I should not be up here with my broken skid plate, but there ya go.
New tag spot for SeeDo!
Here's the clues:
Though the road he's on is not in the valley, it could be considered Shenandoah's Pride.
Many cars have crashed here, but none by accident (that I know of). Some crashes even happened on TV.
This road is within the boundaries of NWVA tag, but just barely.
SeeDo is buried up to his eyes in mulch directly behind the fire hydrant behind my bike in this picture:
Ah, you've been busy.
Yes indeed. And my wife is none too happy about it either. She just doesn't understand.
I know where he is. Can find it on Google Earth.
Now if I just get out soon enough...
Tomorrow is gonna be a good day for it...
Dang! seriously? This tag made it through the nicest day of the last three weeks without getting grabbed? If I hadn't placed it I'd go grab it tonight it's so nice out there.
Now that the tag was grabbed, what was the mistake?
Oh, and it would not be wise to ride two on a bike up this road. It was like that ride we did over Ruth Mountain/Blakey's Ridge several weeks ago. Maybe a few spots even worse, or better depending on how you look at it.
Having now been up there I have an idea what the mistake might have been.
Yes I am glad we did not ride 2-up on the 200 now that I know how rough that road was. As for the mistake, we had figured out the number by the first clue but believe it or not there are two roads named 629 around here. One is County Road 629 and the other is State Route 629. We found State Route 629 and I couldn't figure out any of the other clues in the first post except for the number so we road up and down State Route 629 a bunch of times feeling very silly ... I am sure the residents were suspicious. :)
Was that St rd 629 also known as Welsh Run Rd in Greene? I also road all the way up and down that road, even placed the NWVA tag on it because I ran out of free time and had to put it somewhere, and bwalsh was not too happy that I had put their tag "out of bounds"
I think there's another 629 out in Orange near Orange lake, and I really thoight it was that one based on the possibility of the "used to cost admission" clue, thought the lake might fit that description. I guess not.
Haha.. I got a little confused by the original clue 8:54. My first thought was 6 of 9 or 609. (six-oh-nine)
But after the second clue I knew where it was but had no chance to get up there...
Too funny! I love how we were all so close. The clue that I could not figure out for the life of me was the "use to cost admission". I tried to figure that one out far too long.
Yes, it was 629 / Welsh Run Rd in Greene. :)
Alright. I am sure we figured out the area but if I am interpreting the clues correctly I still need a little more help to narrow it down. Can I have another clue?
