I'm thinking of giving myself a go pro camera for Christmas. Is there a cheaper alternative, and what are the pros an cons of them, if any?

    Do you ride a KLR?

Anyhow, go watch some youtube videos with rolling shutter problems. That's the problem with the lesser alternatives. But look for the Oregon Scientific ATC series if you really want.

Check Rollei Bullet HD Pro camera.
Interesting alternative and much better form factor and protection.

I bought the original Go Pro and it was only 120.00 at Best Buy. The only difference is the new one has a 11 mp camera and the original has a 5 mp camera. The both record in 1080 hd. I am not sure about the newest one.

I have a Contour Roam, decent camera and cheaper than Go Pro, but the mounts are not the best you can find. Also the battery is not removable, so you cannot take a few with you and swap on the road.

There are about 150 other differences between the original and the new one. In fact they are actually two completely different cameras. Go to go pros website and look at them, especially the resolution and the FPS at 1080p. You will quickly see why they are 400 for the new black series.

I almost walked in to best buy and got one today. Those new ones are the shiznit. but ill have to go for a older model:cry. i think from what i'v read and yall's comments ill stick with the go pro. having interchangeable batteries is a big plus when your traveling. also i do agree that the mounting systems are better on the go pro.

i just wanted to know if there was one i haven't seen yet online.

    Thanks yall!

check out the LIC camera. cost about $130. a friend just bought one. it has blue tooth so you can interface with it on your smart phone. you can aim it, configure it, activate it from your BT enabled smart phone.

Contour Drift HD170, great camera for the price. I've had 3 or 4 of them now and like them a lot. Actually have a brand new spare one if you are interested, if so PM me.

Contour's not bad. Not the best image quality or mechanical design, but overall it's a decent camera. My next one will probably be the DriftHD Ghost.

Shot with my old Contour 1080p yesterday:

IMO, the sound on the coutour roam sucks, anything over 15mph sounds like you're in a wind tunnel.

I put a piece of electrical tape over the LED and mic, that brought the level up to about 35m/h. Noticeable improvement.

There is a big difference in image quality between the standard GoPro HD Hero and the GoPro HD Hero 2. I've got both and the 2 is mucho better - much sharper, richer color and better shadow detail out of the camera.

If you can't spend for the 3 series, the Hero 2 is a good camera and the deal Joetool mentions is a good one :deal

i tried the gopro hero, got a dud that never worked so i returned it and got something cheaper.

i got the xtc205 from wallmart, for like $90 out the door. the only con is that it is only 720p but i dont get paid for my vids so i could care less.

pros is this thing is MUCH more aerodinamic and lighter than the gopro. ive also taken two or three crashes right on the camera and besides the following min or two of footage being a little screwy after a crash nothing permenant has occured yet

Sorry for the tangent but I was in cyclegear 3 days ago and they had a huge display with the new HD3 I think it was gopro boasting a sale price of 300 and then later that night saw the HD3 at target for 200. Curious is there is any difference?

Also anyone know if they can sink with the motorola defy rugged phone?
