Got this 81 GL500 Interstate for $500 on a Craigs List ad. Guy was asking $850 or best offer. Was missing the Hondaline fairing. The poor thing would barely run on 1 cylinder. Found the main jets in one carb rolling around in the float bowl. Tires dated 1996 with nearly new tread depth so I figure it's been ridden about 2000 miles in the last 16 years.. 22000 miles on the odometer.

I had the Windjammer fairing already from another project so I made a mount. It did come with the top trunk. I've rebuilt the carbs, replaced regulator, replaced brake shoes and pads, rebuilt calipers, put in fork seals, seat cover, electrolyzed gas tank, owner put in a new battery. Waiting for a warm day to install the new tires.

Less than $1000 into it and it runs excellent. Looking forward to some touring next season.

This thread never ceases to amaze me. Beautiful Vespa and the CX 500 is excellent. If you have some mechanical skills and time you can save a heap of cash and have a classic ride to boot.

Could be. The rear mounts are a "home made" affair. I'm not very well schooled on Suzuki Tanks.
The mufflers are incorrect too. I think I have a "Frankenzuki" here.:lol3

I can play in sub $1500 challenge. And keep up the Suzuki 850 theme as well! :freaky

Bought this GS850G three years ago for $1200. Since then it's been a great bike and took my cross country this past summer. Here it is in its regulation attire (not set up for touring)

Here's my wife's CX500. Bought for $800. Promptly caught on fire due to degraded wiring harness, so insurance paid us $300, which was put into a new ignition box, stator and wiring harness. It got a back yard paint job and new fender from my box of spares. Is now considered the Best. Wedding. Present. Ever. by she who is to be listened to.

I also paid $950 for my '79 XS 650, but I've put so much time, money, blood sweat and tears into that, I don't consider it cheap anymore.

My tank is definately wrong. Mine looks pretty small for the bike, maybe a 550 / 750 or "L" tank as was mentioned? but the fuel gauge still works.
I see that 1979 was the first year for the 850. Mine has Mikuni carbs, not the CV type, but with accelerator pumps. I wonder if those are the correct carbs? They definately have no lag when I put the juice to her. Almost scary acceleration.

Start a rebuild thread over in some assembly required, and you will get a lot of help.

Recently picked up this beauty, a 76 Goldwing with 68,000 miles.....$410!
And YES, it RUNS!! (runs a bit crappy, but I can fix that!)
Runs good enough that I put over 200 miles on it after rode it home.
Needs a water pump and the carbs cleaned and it will be ready to go!

Nice find! That's only $10 more than I paid for mine, and that was 7 years ago and it was two wrecked GLs then. I don't know how familiar you are with OldWings but the best quality carb kits are from here: http://www.randakks.com/ And there's a great forum at www.ngwclub.com

You don't want to have to take those carbs off more than once if you can help it! They're not any worse to rebuild than any other Keihin CV carbs, but there's a lot more attached to them than your typical carb rack. Make sure your gas tank is rust-free, and you put a good fuel filter on it. All in all, though, not bad and once you have it fixed up they are great runners. 68,000 miles is just broken in.

Your bike is a '79. That was the only year that the 850G has a kickstarter and VM carbs. Those carbs are correct for the bike. The '80 model saw the switch to CV's and no more kicker.

The tank is definitely an L tank, possible from a 550 due to the size of it.

For tons more information about the Suzuki GS's check out the GSResources forum. Great people there, and half of them can rebuilt a GS in their sleep.

I hate non-original tanks on bikes, but that one works for me! Even adds to the beauty of the bike, somehow! Nice choice...750 triple?

I'll agree with that. I have a Conti Motion on the rear of my F4i with a now unrepairable puncture & replacing with D616s..stock Uly fitment.
Should be good in this rain Calif is experiencing right now.

edit to stay on topic: The F4i was $0, as it came to me in several pieces.
