Just got into a place and will be there for 6 months, was wondering if anyone on the forum lives around here or plans on doing any trips out here. Would be cool to make some friends on a new continent especially since I'll be here a while.

Haven't gotten a bike yet, but I figure renting is cheaper long term for trips.

Eh up mate, get yourself to the Riders Corner http://www.riderscorner.net/ in CM and speak to Phil, I am sure he can point you in the right direction and you will meet like minded folk there. C&P rentals are good, I had a great experiance with them a couple of years ago

Thanks for dropping that, I'll try to swing by there this week and see what's up there. Being a wee bit younger than most can make things tough especially in a city full of older riders, but I'm sure this guy will be helpful and kind. I did see c&p rentals, their prices are comparable to those in Japan though and I would think that there would be cheaper rentals in Thailand though I haven't seen much cheaper. I'm sure some bartering is in order especially for longer rides but definitely a bit pricier than I'd expect, though I'm uninformed on the front of motorcycle rentals here.

No problem, try these too http://www.thailandmotorcycle.tours/ I think it was formally known a Tony's Big Bikes. Although I have never used them. I would say that you could negotiate some discount for a longer rental. The riding is great in that area of Thailand, i am sure you will enjoy it, a link to my trip report is in the signature bolck below

Welcome to Chiang Mai! I'm currently in South Dakota riding the wheels off a Triumph Tiger but will be back and August. Drop me a PM and we can grab a coffee once I'm over jet lag...

I rented a Honda XR250 in Chiang Mai years ago. It was interesting in the hills passing by the opium fields and waving to the locals as I went by. They'd wave back. I wonder of it's still like that? I mean, are they still growing it 45 minutes out if the city?

I'm currently riding a Tiger in Australia but I'm heading over to Chiang Mai in October just for a couple of weeks and will rent a bike while there. I've been there briefly before but still keen to pick up any tips or tricks from those that know the area better.

Nice to see all the replies even though it is sad to see there aren't any people here currently.

I'll definitely be here in August, just hit me up when you're over your jet lag haha.

Also to Jek, I hope someone can help you out with tips, maybe by that time I'll know a bit more about the area and could help. Right now I mostly stay inside to work and only go out to run errands or grab a coffee.

Okay -- I'm back, mostly over jet lag.

Who wants to get together? Two (selfish) venues. I've got an on-going construction project I need to check in on daily, that also has a cafe. So a morning coffee works for me most days -- at CrossFit Chiang Mai / Rx Cafe Chiang Mai. I'll have my laptop and we can go over some of the rides I've got marked in Furkot.

And I'll also be at the UN Irish Pub on the 25th (my band The Itinerants plays the last Friday of the month). No laptop in tow, but we can meet. :-)

I'm here too and am the co-owner of www.tonysbigbikes.com and www.thailandmotorcycle.tours mentioned earlier in this thread. We're based in central CM. I'd be up for meeting for a morning coffee and can give you advice based on a shedload of years riding in the area.

I frequently visit Chiang Mai and keep a bike in here. Currently in town till Nov 10th, I should visit at least once more before the burning season. Always down for some rides!
