2 of us are packed up and heading to Denver where we will pick up 3 more friends. Our steeds include 1 1150GS, 1 1200GS and 3 1200GSAs.

The plan is to pick up the our other riders on Friday and head on scenic pavement to Delores, CO, which is where the dirt portion of the Colorado Backcountry Discovery Route begins, and head north. We probably grab a hotel in Telluride on Friday night which could be our last hotel for 9 days until we have to catch a return flight.

We are currently motoring through Topeka Kansas and guzzling 9mpg with the Silverado.

Stay tuned if you want vicarious adventure. Or, if you want to feel better about yourself and your riding abilities as we catalog how many times Judd goes down and how many pieces of his bike get broken and left behind. Fortunately, he is impact resistant. Here is his back and a Klim Badlands tatoo from one recent mishap. .

    Impact resistant for sure!

I'll refrain from posting the giant hip bruise related to the same "mishap". :D

Check out the video - Short but Sweet!

If you're not wrecking once in a while, you're not pushing yourself hard enough!

See you boys Friday AM! safe travels!

For those not familiar with the COBDR, here is your background info...
    http://www.backcountrydiscoveryroutes.com/COBDR
This is a route that goes north to south over the entire state of CO with the goal of touching pavement as little as possible. We look forward to a challenging ride with dirt switchbacks at 12,000ft, abandoned mines, beautiful scenery and bonding with good dudes.

Hard driving rain last night at our hotel in Salina, KS. It kept up through the first morning stretch on hwy 70. We will see how water tight our cases and Wolf-man dry bags are when we arrive in Denver this afternoon.
I've banged out and re-riveted my zega cases more times than I can count. I don't have high expectations for dry cases but my clothes aren't in there right now. Items that could be wet in cases and crash bar bags include tools, pump, dehydrated food, cooler, jetboil, spare bolt box, nalgene water bottles and camping pouch with headlamp, fire starters, etc. A little dampness definitely won't hurt the bourbon.

We decided to unlatch Judd's bike and tip it over just so it would feel at home. Judd's cases will be filled with water on the first creek crossing so no one is worried about his contents.

BT - You'll need to tip the bike over aggressively so it feels normal.

Also - here is proof that BT's bike NEVER goes over...:rofl

Got to the Holiday Inn Express near the Denver airport. Our comrades get in at 7:15AM. I'll pick them up and then we roll. All bikes in trailer are unwratcheted and on their side stands with the gate locked. My son's bike in the bed of the truck. We will need another set of hands to unleash that puppy. I've tried doing it with 2 guys and that isn't enough. We need no bike drama at this stage.

Speaking on puppies, it is 99 degrees here... Hotter than a dachshund's balls dragging on sizzling blacktop.

Today we tested our rain gear and gortex. For the most part, most of it works most of the time. The upside is that CO needs the rain to help with rampant forest fires. The downside is that it slowed us down.

Research told me that camping sites around Telluride were hard to find given topography. We said, "screw the research" and spent about an hour cruising on forest roads in search of. We found some places where we could sleep but they weren't the scenic place we were expecting on night one.

Next thing we new it was getting dark and sprinkling again and we decide to go to Telluride for a room. Well the hits kept coming. It is an expensive destination town AND it is a weekend AND there is a festival. We found one place for $289 a night with one king bed. 5 grown men in one room... Perfect.

All in all it was still a good day. The worst roads in CO on the worst days are pretty much better than the best roads in OH on the best days. The past several years we have been doing a lot of offloading on these trips. I haven't done a 350 mile day for a while. It felt good.

Tomorrow we head to Dolores and the. We are on the trail. I almost forgot... Biggest surprise of the day is that Judd didn't go down.

Judd-light of the day - riding through driving rain and having to jump under a porch of a random abandoned cabin to escape the worst of it. Lightening striking all around us. Amazing

Note - one man went down today, wasn't me.

Then grabbed a hotel in Telluride... Dig it.
