June 3, 2012. Mt. Mitchell, Blue Ridge Parkway near Asheville, NC. It was partly cloudy and pleasant in Asheville, 42 degrees and in the clouds on Mt. Mitchell.

They're not really rare at all... in the mountains obviously. They don't move, which is one of the reason's they're called Standing Lenticulars. They are constantly forming on the windward side and dissipating on the lee side. They're caused by the air being pushed up because of the mountain, and cooling below the dew point. This storm yesterday produced baseball size hail in Dallas.. luckily i was north of it and didn't sustain any damage.
