    I'm looking for a change. I can't afford a new bike, right now, but I can drag up enough scratch for a paint job. I've ruined the paint on my Strom trying to get the sticky crap off that was under the stickers, so I'm going to paint the big plastic parts.

    If you had the canvas that I have, what color would you pick? I like the original color but hey, any paint I choose will cost the same so why not at least think about a change, right?

    black and red and some drab green always a nice statement, :evil this was last summer's project:

    Fixed a distracting mysterious dent in my tank, repaired some upper fairing cracks, a little color here and there, some OD green Mil-Spec Pelican Storms, the rest is history.

    Fun project, you can go simple or really make her pop. I had a chum with a body shop lend me some paint booth time and a couple products.
    FYI, a pint of quality red base coat paint for this project was like $48 bucks, and then had to be clear coated. End result, light years ahead of STOCK FINISH. Worth it!

    Hire it out if it is not in your skillset. The compliments alone are well worth it. Do not use spray cans!

    Your work is way above what the normal bed liner shower most KLRista would do.:thumb

    One thing I wanted to do on my KLR was mess with some intentional flat finished or satin finished clears over standard base colors.

    Suzuki is doing more of that flat finish on the new Stroms as an example.

    Basically, you use the same type of paint or base coat, but the "clear" finish that comes last is satin or flat-ish instead of shiny, giving all or part of your work a different look. Sometimes, a flat finished fuel tank surrounded by standard higher gloss fairing plastics, etc., can delivery a neat end result.

    Most think of the flat finishes or satin finishes as only OD army green or black.

    Wrong. Ural is turning out a few rigs in satin or flat finished orange, that I saw a show recently. I liked it alot.

    They are doing it with satin powder coat, but it could be done as easy with base coat/clear coat and go satin or flat.

    Just sayin. I have also seen some cool satin clear reds, but this is orange for the sake of conversation :evil

    Satin finish is certainly something that I hadn't considered. Well, not past the OD that is. I'll have to think about that if only for the reason of making it look different.

    I am no doubt in a world by myself, but to me a motorcycle repainted is the ultimate sin and I would never own a repaint or even dream in my worst nightmare of doing so. I have actually had this nightmare and after waking up was relieved even my old 1974 models still have factory paint.
    I like the shine of a nice paint as much as the next guy, but there is something appealing about unmolested factory paint albeit even if it's in poor shape. There is this 1987/88 Ford F350 drives around the area here that has no paint left, was original silver that all pealed like all of them, but he opted to leave it be, so all just bare metal and rust for the paint. Cool, cool looking to me left alone.
    OK, I'm different, but would still never consider repaint.

    Thanks for that Ron, I think. I guess nobody that owned a Honda in the early 70's thought their plain little bikes would ever be worth anything. So I can see your point.

    I'm still painting my homely beastie. Even if it gets shot with the original color, it's getting a refresh. What I've done to the paint is just too painful for me to look at any longer.

    I promise, if I ever meet you, I'll keep my bike far from your view. I wouldn't want to cause you to have nightmares. :D

    Paint is super subjective.

    On dl650v1.0 I like silver with the head light surround painted to match the body color.
    A decent candy red or burnt orange could also work.

    If your in to conspicuity then go for a yellow or white color.

    A tone on tone with a really light silver and med silver would also looks nice.

    Did you two see the article in the new Cycle World about the bike that you would want if the world were to end? They pitted the KLR against the new Husky 650, Tiger 800XC, KTM 990 Adventure Baja, and Yamaha Tenere 1200. You'll never guess which bike they picked. :wink:

    I would make mention of it on a KLR forum, but around here I figgered I would be met with foul-smelling old fruit.

    I love my "Thailand Caddillac", but like a Ural or other simple minded bike, they do require some care and feeding. That being stated, there is something to be said for the stone dumb, all day donkey that has been around for 25 years now.

    It's my swiss army bike. but I long for a new Vee 650 for longer trips perhaps. I am not a brand snob, I owned a Suzuki King Quad and a 4 stroke Suzuki outboard and they were both bullet proof, I really don't know what the Suzuki parts and service counter even looks like.

    I have my own bar stool at the local Kawi dealers, all three of them know me by name.... :evil I would always keep the KLR around, it's a hoot to work on.

    3m makes a can of adhesive remover for sticker residue.Paint is overrated go with rhino liner or a mossy oak paint job the more red neck the better.:1drink
