Personally, I do not think it matters. It is fantastic scenery either way. Just try and not run off the road swiveling your head all around to see it. Especially on MDH, it might hurt.

I've ridden them both ways and don't really have a preference.

If you catch 550 during a time of low traffic, it can be a blast. Just keep in mind that it's very unforgiving in places should you run outside the white lines.

In otherwords, it'll be a slow ride if you're taking in the scenery, and you won't see any scenery if you're enjoying the ride.

If you have any hint of vertigo, 550 will test you.

    Great road, though.

Whichever direction gets you on MDH first thing in the morning, its a lot more fun when you don't have to battle slow moving RV's and Harley road blocks.

Start in Grand Junction and ride south. Either way, it's gonna be a memorable ride.

rt 50 south from GJ is straight and kind boring so i would go that way 1st (and out of the way) & then you end the ride doing 141 with great riding. i'd also go up 145 to telluride then 141 not through dove creek.

Imogene Pass is a 4 wheel drive route between Telluride and Ouray. Usually opens for the July 4th weekend.
Dissapointment Valley is a great bit of remote Colorado. Easy dirt roads.
Not sure about FR648. Sure I've been on it but I don't see it in the google links.
