I'll start by saying that this was a ride organized by the Motorcycle Touring Forum Group. However, I post and Ride with both groups, and wanted to share my ride with everyone.
The plan was to meet in Silverton Colorado on Monday the 5th of Aug. and ride Tues, Weds, and Thurs. However, My buddy John from Louisville and I planned on riding all week.
He meet me Friday night and we loaded up the DR and XR 650's and headed West early Saturday Morning. For the sake of speed, We trailered them out to Canon City Co. and left the truck there.

    The trip out....

After leaving the truck behind, John had to stop to fill his prescription...

    Disclaimer!!!
Now don't get this wrong, We don't do that! BUT apparantly John has a buddy who will enjoy the picture:evil

We had planned on riding highway 50 out to lake city then riding across the passes to Silverton. The weather did not cooperate as there was LOTS of lightning in the passes. We played it safe and rode 50 out to Montrose and South to Ourey and out the million Dollar Hwy to Silverton.

We stopped just outside of town to play in the water and cool down...

We finally rolled into town and checked into the Red Mountain RV resort.

I think John is happy, Happy, Happy!!

We walked around the resort to see what it had to offer. It was a good basic clean place. It has a great little grocery store just across the street. It was small, but had everything we would need.

Here is a cool snowmobile circa ???

We road up the street to find some food and beverages:evil We found the Brown Bear Cafe which would turn out to be our destination for most of our meals. Good food, cold drinks, and very nice waitreses.
After a few drinks, we watched the sun set on our first night in Silverton...

I will start day 2 as John didn't take to many pictures up until now..

We were up early..(everyday at 5:30 sharp for Johns coffee) :D
We were greeted with a cool mountain dew on the bikes:rofl

The plan today was to ride Ophir pass over to Telluride. ( to hell you ride)

After gassing up, we headed up into the cool mountain air..

A familiar veiw in many ride reports. But my bike is up there now!!

We stopped to check out the old mines....

    Past the post office...

We rode a nice gravel road into Telluride to find a place that would serve 2 dirty bikers. After 2 or 3 laps through the tourest section, John asked a local were we should eat. He sent us over to Floradora's restaurant. It was a very unremarkable place to eat. We should of brought trail mix...:huh

So we high tailed it back to the mountain and rode back over Ophir to Silverton.

    See John down the hill?

We got back early to meet the rest of the group for dinner...

I'm surprised he didn't suggest Montrose! Telluride is not very dirt bike friendly, too far left! Looking forward to more of your adventures, Durango is my hometown and I know (and often miss) the country!

The boss is gone so I will get some of this posted :D
The 6 of us ( Myself, John ,Gene, Kerry, Gary, Ron and for the life of me I can't remember the last mans name...SORRY) met at the RV camp for the first group ride. The plan was to ride out to Anamas forks,

Ron wanted a picture near these buildings. I was afraid of nails....Not Ron. He is fearless!!!

Taking a break after the Pass...

On the way to lake City, we passed lake San Cristobal...

Gene said that the lake was formed by loose constantly moving rock masses that have blocked a mountain stream.

We rolled into Lake city for lunch at the
    [IMG]

The waitress made Gene play "guess were I'm From" She had a Russion accent, but turns out that she was from Slovakia. This is between Hungary and Poland. She had bright red hair and watching Gene and her interact was very intertaining. I am ashamed that I didn't get any pictures of the waitresses anywhere....Sorry Andy. Maybe someone else did.

After Lunch, it was up Engineer pass. First stop was at an old mine that had a old weathered Dam.

A few miles up the road, we stopped at a very cool waterfall. We hiked down a trail a few yards to this...

Does this helmet make my head look big?

A few miles up, I found my new house for sale...

    Kerry is loving this trail!

    The summit!!

It started to rain at the top. We put on our rain gear and headed down. The trail was wet and loaded with jeeps and 4 wheelers of all kinds.
That is why John thought, this is a Great time to do some sight seeing :D

This was the result of the sight seeing....

No rider damage, just plastic. He took the windsheild off back at camp. And with a little JB weld and duct tape, it was good as new!! It made the trip home in one peice!!

I separated from the group near the town and followed a small county road that followed the creek into town.

We ended this day with another meal at the Brown bear. My buddy Bill will be there next week. I hope he stops in for a cold one. They have great food too!

That's what I thought too, the Wife/Boss went shopping or something allowing for free time to relax, as I'm usually burdened down with a ton of Honey Do's for about a week too when I return from a ride.:evil

The group we had was a good one. Gary and Kerry from Grand Junction, CO, Tom from ShowLow Arizona and Ron "the flyin pickle' from Minny-so-tah :D I'd never met but was glad to do so. Gene has led us around out here before and at 74 can still out ride me with his eyes closed. But the first day Kevin and I were on our own. We decided to ride over Ophir and have lunch at Telluride.

The view from our front porch the first morning. Who wouldn't love this?

    Ophir pass
    [IMG]

    Glam shot
    [IMG]

We stood around looking at the vast expanse and a whistle pig trotted down the road and was getting close to our helmets and gloves. He's just above and right of my helmet. Hard to see. I'd heard of how they eat rubber so I was worried he'd run off with one of my gloves.

    Kevin getting near the pass
    [IMG]

The town of Ophir in the distance
    [IMG]

Even the cabs are four wheel drive. We were going to eat at Grumpy's but it was closed.

    More later...
