Nice one buddy. I'm still sore from our trials day! And ready for another Temecula gas station session. What the heck was up with the scene there!?

I think there is some "what outrageous thing have you carried" thread out there on ADV, but I couldn't find it. If it's dead, yeah, it's time to revive it.

Motorcycles have special challenges when used as a car replacement, but the benefits, particularly in Socal, outweigh the disadvantages if you are comfortable with the unique risk involved.

"First you say it, then you do it"

Bill Cosby said this in reference to being in an auto accident.

Last Friday I was waiting in a line of traffic. Straight flat road 40MPH speed limit. The traffic was completely stopped due to Cops directing traffic for a HS graduation about 200 yards up the road.

My bike is fully loaded for a weekend trip and I was heading to meet some friends.

I hear tires screeching and a really loud bang. I look in the side mirror and I see the SUV behind me being pushed forward then the car that hit it with its entire front end caved in! Luckily for me the SUV stopped about 2 car lengths behind me. About 5 seconds after it happened reality sunk in that if the SUV wasn't there I would have been dead....or close to it. If the SUV had been right up on me I certainly would have been involved. I never did find out what exactly happened but its pretty obvious the driver of the car wasn't paying attention....

I owe the SUV driver a beer....

Going through town yesterday, a lady is spending more time looking down at her hand held whatever and driving erratically. A mile later another driver has her paperwork on her steering wheel and paying more attention to that than the road. :fpalm Doesn't anyone just drive anymore?

My 19 year old daughter made the observation that driving a manual transmission car helps you to keep your attention on driving. She's commented that her friends, all in automatics, don't seem to give enough attention to what they're doing when they're behind the wheel. I think she was raised right. :D

Can't tell you how many people are taken aback with the stick in my sedan - sort of "Wow, they still put those in passenger vehicles ? " is the usual impression.

While shopping for a car for my Mom I was told by the Subaru salesman that almost the whole Subaru line is available with manual trans. I haven't verified that but it sounds good to me if true.

I have an Acura TL with the 6 speed manual trans, a very different car from the automatic TL.
We also had a manual trans rav 4, loads of fun on road and off.
Traded that in on a newer CRV with an automatic, fewer and fewer cars can be got with a manual as the gizmo's don't work with it very well.
That self park, stability control stuff.

There are people that do not like shifting motorcycles, they love abs, gps, electric start, tubeless tires, auto valve adjustments, sound systems, power adjust windshields, a reverse gear, grip warmers, and lots of luggage.

If someone is drifting into my lane and obviously not paying attention, they get a blast with the air horns.

A month or so ago, I called someone in who was drifting all over the road, nearly ran into the back of me twice and then drifted over into two other vehicles, who fortunately both managed to avoid her. When she went past me I noted that she was on the phone, had a dog in her lap yet seemed so utterly oblivious to her surroundings that those two distractions could hardly account for a fraction of it - Doubtless some mind altering chemicals involved.

You can get the WRX with a manual or auto. The top-of-the-line STi model only comes with a 6-speed manual.

On the way into work today and I was about 45 minutes earlier than I normally am.
2 lane freeway entrance and I have a guy in a Prius next to me.
I begin to roll on the throttle and guy goes all hammer down on me. Traffic is packed in behind him so I can't just let him get out ahead and get into his lane (second lane I am in ends in an exit and I have a lot farther to go than that).
He's on it hard...hard enough that I can smell ozone from his hamsters burning.
So I shake my head and give it some juice. Squirt out ahead, make my lane change and continue on my way.

Little do I know that Prius guy is stalking me all the way into downtown.
I am sitting at the first set of lights after getting off the freeway when Prius guy comes to a semi-screeching (damn you ABS for taking away his abaility to stop noisily!) halt right next to me with his window down and yells at me, "At least mine gets 50mpg!!!".

I flip up my visor, look at him with a hearty grin and say, "So does mine and it looks a hell of a lot cooler doing it too."

His face frozen in a grimmace of pain, the light turns green and I merrily continue on my way.

I've had three different guys at work (each < 30) make a comment about driving a tons of manual trannys. We'll go out to lunch and I'll offer to let them drive my car. It's funny to see how flummoxed they are by atrue manual trans. I guess they didn't realize that paddle shifters and toggle sticks are NOT manuals.
