Condo to condo loop via hungerford

    Hi all, a brief overview of my 4 day ADV ride conducted on Tuesday 10th April - Friday 13th April 2012.


    Starting from Condobolin Central West NSW and incorporating:
    • Nymagee
    • Cobar
    • Louth
    • Bourke
    • Fords Bridge
    • Hungerford Qld
    • Wanaaring
    • White Cliffs
    • Wilcannia
    • Ivanhoe
    • Hillston
    • Lake Cargelligo
    • Condobolin
    3 Riders
    • Triumph Tiger 800xc (Knobbies)
    • Honda Transalp 650 (Knobbies)
    • BMW GS 1200 (Dual Sport Tyres)
    Camped along the way, self sufficient with food and a backup ute carring our camping gear

    DAY ONE

    Departed Condo at 8am and headed north on Cobar road for approx 5km, Turning left heading west onto Palestine road.
    Tar from Condo to Palestine for approx 40km.
    Then mix of varing dirt surfaces, predominately loose gravel.
    Cattle grids are good and easily hit at speed (lift ya bum)....
    Turn right at approx 100km from Condo onto Nymagee rd.
    Same sort of conditions with some easy wash outs and cattle grids and easy pace of 100km/hr

    Nymagee (approx 150km from Condo)
    Pub/Rooms
    No fuel
    No store

    From Nymagee heading west on sealed Cobar road turning left onto 'Shuttleton' Road approx 17km from Nymagee.
    Heading through crossing the Kidman Hwy onto 'Wyree' & then 'Lachlan Downs' roads.
    Dirt road, pretty rough at times, with bull dust holes and cattle grids but still very rideable and easy pace of 80 -100km/hr


    COBAR (approx 160km from Nymagee, 310km From Condo)
    All bikes reaching Cobar on one tank of fuel..Tiger and Transalp with fuel lights on...
    Well serviced mining town with plenty of Pubs, Motels, servos's & stores
    Fuelled up, had lunch and took Louth /Bourke road turning left onto Louth road heading west.
    Tar for approx 40km then some interesting variation of road surfaces. Loose gravel, sandy to a combo of sandy gravel & bulldust which proved to be the trickiest giving all of us a scare at some stage. (pant sh*ting actually). slower pace of around 70-80km/hr was required :eek1

    LOUTH (approx 130km from Cobar)
    Arived at about 2.30pm
    Pub (goooood beer)
    Some basic supplies available at Pub
    A nice grassed powered camping area beside pub available for $5 each. Toilets. Located on the Darling river.
    2 x new large cabins available with showers etc
    Mozzies were OK if you have spray.
    River was on the drop after recent floods however Tilpa and below to Menindee via the river roads were still shut.
    After a few beers, some discussion and a light bulb moment, we realised that our air pressures were too high in particular on the Transalp (35 psi)!!...mine 28...no wonder we had trouble with the sandy stuff.....

    DAY TWO<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" /><o:p></o:p>
    8am start and headed north on the east side river road to Bourke<o:p></o:p>
    Pretty good dirt all the way, sandy gravel. Good pace 100+ km/h<o:p></o:p>
    BOURKE (approx. 100km from Louth)<o:p></o:p>
    Took a quick tour of the ‘interesting’ main street…then to the Wharf precinct and the Darling River which was a contrast to the main street. Some interesting history info boards to read, and a working steam engine to see. Grabbed a great Latte from the gift wares shop. Public toilets available.<o:p></o:p>
    Grabbed some fuel at the BP servo on edge of town north on Mitchell Hwy. Then we decided we would head to Hungerford on the Qld border. The roads had been previously shut due to floods/rain but were open. We rang the shire for advice and they said surface should be OK. So we decided to re evaluate at Fords Bridge. Dirt road to Fords Bridge in the early piece was good and fast with a mix of loose gravel and sandy gravel after that.<o:p></o:p>

    Chatted to a local out the front of the Pub and he said to take it easy at the rocky section as riders in the past have come off there.<o:p></o:p>
    So we headed off to Hungerford. The road was a mix of loose gravel, sandy gravel/bulldust, washouts with one major one littered in large potholes in the bottom of the tar lining it due to recent weather.<o:p></o:p>
    The rocky section wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be, large golf ball size type rock with an occasional half buried rock but easy manageable.
    Had our first and only water crossing to do along here...well just a large puddle in a low lying wash out really...
    After about Yantabulla the roads improved and opened up into long paddocks and brush scrub. Caution with cattle in this area, apparently they are SLOW…well so the sign says anyhow (SLOW – CATTLE) J Opened the Border gate on the dingo fence and entered QLD/Hungerford. Pace through to here was fast and quite enjoyable 110+km/h<o:p></o:p>
    HUNGERFORD QLD (approx 220km from Bourke)<o:p></o:p>

    A really old pub with a lot of knick knacks to see and read inside and out. We tried the local beverage (cans) and made lunch under their large covered outdoor area then headed out to Wanaaring.<o:p></o:p>
    This was a really great piece of road and we were able to keep a good pace up all the way to the T section turn off 10 ks outside Wanaaring.<o:p></o:p>
    It was predominantly a mix of hard red clay with a light sandy covering. Cattle grids were a little bull dusty either side but still easy to maintain pace over. We came across this little white fluffy Maltese dog out the middle of nowhere sitting in the middle of road outside a property gate that had an interesting mailbox…an actual motorbike with a dummy on board chucking a wheelie….weird to suddenly see way out there....:huh
    Once we hit the T section 10ks from Wanaaring the road turned to sh*t, very sandy/bull dusty crap, glad we only had short bit to do…<o:p></o:p>
    Got to Wanaaring pub and sampled the local beverage, then went to the local store and got a powered campsite at the grassed camp area. $7.50 per head includes use of the amenities block with endless gas hot water…awesome relief after 2 days riding.<o:p></o:p>

    DAY THREE<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" /><o:p></o:p>
    Store opened at 8am and we topped the tanks. When you are up in these areas I reckon you should top them at every opportunity.<o:p></o:p>
    A really great store, with alot of essentials and a large shelf section dedicated to spare tyre tubes from 17" - 21", new Knobbie, punture kits etc...great to see them looking after the riders...Headed south from Wanaaring to White Cliffs.<o:p></o:p>
    Another interesting road. This road had EVERYTHING......Great wide open fast sections most of the way to single lane roads with tuffs of grass up the middle and to the sides. BIG washouts, rocky gravel, to VERY VERY rocky sections. Heaps of roos, emus and goats early on..<o:p></o:p>
    Be careful of the washouts on this road, unlike most of the washouts we had encountered where we were able to keep the gas on, these were different, they have had a heap of water through them recently and are unpredictable when its too late....so back off when approaching these ones.<o:p></o:p>
    Great contrasts of landscape with the pink and red areas of iron rock…<o:p></o:p>
    Around the Perri Lake section the road surface become very very rocky..like thick rocky iron rock rocky.. with some larger buried rocks poking there head through and giving the potential to do some rim damage.<o:p></o:p>
    The washouts were BIG, one with boulders entering and exiting that had to be negotiated in first gear.<o:p></o:p>
    The road from the Mandaly turn off down to Wilcannia was still closed due to flood water. From this turn off to White Cliffs the road improved, Some more big washouts to watch however the council had been through with a grader and cleaned some so they were mostly easy & fast.<o:p></o:p>

    Sampled the local beverage then headen up to 'Jocks place' to have a look at an underground mine/home. What a funny character this guy is...Mention you are from near Orange and he will tell you "I've been to Bloomfield"(mental institution)… says it all really....$5 will get you in. He has a great collection of old wares and knick knacks in the mines as well. Bit more of a look around the streets then back to the street for a hamburger and fuel at the store....<o:p></o:p>
    Headed from White Cliffs to Wilcannia unfortunately this is where the tar section had to come into it..95km of it!!! Legal speed limit of 110 applies on this road which helped….a bit….along with some music blue toothed to the headset...<o:p></o:p>
    WILCANNIA (approx. 95km from White Cliffs)<o:p></o:p>

    Had a ride around the streets looking at some really nice huge old sandstone buildings now standing derelict. Other than that I personally found it to be a little bit of a depressing sort of a town..<o:p></o:p>
    The Darling was on the drop and we made our way to the Ivanhoe turn off 20km out and the start of the Cobb Hwy.<o:p></o:p>
    A pretty good fast dirt section, predominately loose sandy gravel with some bull dust sections.<o:p></o:p>
    The Manara Hills section was short a winding section that was about a foot deep in red sand in one section…We hit it and got through it no dramas at about 90km/h but there were two bikes heading in opposite direction that were legs down bike wobbling snail pacing and roosting through it…I had a chuckle thinking that was us a couple of days ago and here we are smashing through it giving a toot and a friendly wave as we passed them by..<o:p></o:p>
    Watch the cattle grids, some VERY steep ones that will send you skywards and some loose dust either side as well..<o:p></o:p>
    My mate on the Transalp didn’t completely fill his tank at White Cliffs and came to a holt about 20km out of Ivanhoe….Fuel stops and distances can be far and few between thats why it is important to fill when you can and fill the tank when you do…<o:p></o:p>
    Luckily he only has to wait 10 mins for our back up ute with the fuel jerry on board…Pace fast 110+ km/h<o:p></o:p>
    IVANHOE (approx 160km/h)<o:p></o:p>

    Got into Ivanhoe around 4.30 pm to just catch the servo in time before close.<o:p></o:p>
    The Ivanhoe/Cobar road and the Ivanhoe/Trida Rail line rd were all closed so we could only go one way and that was south through Hillston.<o:p></o:p>
    The idea was to pull up out the road ‘a bit’ and set up camp with a big arse fire and cook up a great Korma curry….Hmmmm well 5 mins out of Ivanhoe and it turns into the treeless Hay plains, not a side road to be seen and if there was, not a tree or firewood to be seen…just fence lines and swampy water areas…so we went ‘a bit further’…and a just a ‘bit further’….50 km later we were no better, the sun was setting and the Mozzies were HORIFIC…..<o:p></o:p>
    From Mossgiell we turned left onto the Hillston rd and decided to look down that way…same deal, swampy water and fence lines…the sun was now all but gone, there was bull dust sections…My worst nightmare had begun, I was riding a bull dusted road at night with a tinted visor covered in mozzie guts, with my headlights getting dimmer and dimmer from mozzie guts (that’s how bad they were!!). There was no way I was going to camp in this area so I punched it to Hillston with crew in tow arriving at around 7.00pm. Quite an experience and remember thinking at the time….”well that’s why they call this adventure riding I guess”…Note to self must install a set of driving lights!!….<o:p></o:p>

    We ate at a pub then booked into the Caravan Park and got a cabin for the night…no big arse fire…no Korma curry..:cry

    At around 8.30am from Hillston we headed north on the Kidman Way then turned off onto the Lake Cargelligo rd approx 35km out. Unfortunately this section was all sealed. But a nice country side ride all the same.<o:p></o:p>

    We refuelled and got some smoko from the Bakery, before the Transalp headed off to Coolamon via West Wyalong.<o:p></o:p>
    We continued onto Condobolin taking the dirt river road turning left approx 10ks out. Stopped to look at the Weir which was in flood. It is here that Lake Cargelligo is filled via a regulated channel above the weir.<o:p></o:p>
    The road from here all the way to Condo is good fast loose gravel… pace 110+ km/h<o:p></o:p>
    Arrived Condo around 1130am
    CONDOBOLIN (approx. 100km from Lake Cargelligo)<o:p></o:p>

    TOTAL DISTANCE TRAVELLED 1660 km
    This was a first for all three of us. Two of us being predominently road riders in the past. It was an awesome and relative easy ride overall. It had it all in terms of road conditions but wasnt too testing. <o:p></o:p>
    On the Tiger I ran brand a new Mitas E07 on the rear and a MT 21 front. Both handled the conditions well with hardly any tread loss!! <o:p></o:p>
    The Transalp ran a half worn EO9 rear and MT 21 front. The rear still had as much knobbie as he started.<o:p></o:p>
    The Beemer ran the standard issued Annakee dual purpose tyres. I was concerned that they would prove to be a little slippery for him, but a combination of years of dirt riding and a proven stable all round bike, he had no real more dramas than us. :clap:freaky

    NAH mate no goats were seen out round Cobar thats not to say that there not there. Heaps up around Wanaaring..they were even having an annual Goat Muster the following weekend...

    Great rr, if you are out that way again it's worTh dropping in to see the Reola shearing shed, it's off the Wanarring , white ciffs road. Built in 1990, all the modern convieniences, a semi can do a u turn in the down stairs wool room.
    U need to ring the station and book in to get shown around, costs bugger all, or it did 10 years ago, nicE people.

    Those bugs you were covered in would have been blood worm, not mozzies. They swarm in the millions out there. They are called blood worm because their larvae are a transparent red colour.:norton

    Nahhh definately blood sucking Mozzies...there has been major flooding and rain and they are just everywhere at present from Hillston to Hungerford. All juvenile, looking for fresh bloooooood.....

    Any photo's mate? Haven't been out that way when it's green...

    Oh and who's the lunatic? You blokes paid Mad Jock $5 a pop! Did that years ago and it was only $2 a pop... there's inflation for you then! When we were there he got in his head that we were shearers! After that he refered to us as "You shearers..." . M. A. D. but in a good way.

    How was the Nymagee rd? I rode my fully loaded GSA ( with TKC80's ) from Condo to Nymagee in 2009. The road was 4 inch deep mud, only one fall. I had to cook my own counter meal. Loved it though.

    Google Picassa is a nice solution. In Windows you get a right click mouse option to upload. Resize the pics first though. MS Resizer makes it easy too, with a right click option.

    And I believe that Smugmug is recommended too.

    Nice RR, I shall be out some that way in the next couple of weeks to and from the Flinders.

    Just make sure you resize the photo's when you get them there.... or else they will be HUGE when you link them to here.

    You need to copy the IMG code.

    Sounds like the ride went well, did you end up with many detours due to the wet? How'd the E07 go?
