I did that a few years back. The road out north of the lake wasn't bad, but the road south of the lake was a "paved" road worse than any dirt road I've ever been on.

It's been a couple of years since I rode by, and I don't know if there is any designated camping, but the south road is pretty remote, so there may be areas there where you can camp. The north road runs through population so unless there is a designated camping area, I don't remember much that you could camp on. My memory could be faulty though.

I wouldn't recommend camping anywhere near there. This is on the San Carlos reservation so camp at your own risk. And c'mon guys, the road isn't that bad. I did it on my VFR.

So the Gila river is SUPPOSED to have water in it? I crossed it today and it was dry as a bone (as always) the only time I see water is when it's raining. (BTW was riding just south of Phoenix)

Hey BigDog, the dam, river (Gila) and reservoir (San Carlos) are all on the San Carlos Indian Reservation, so permits are

essential...here is a link with pricing options....http://www.arizonahandbook.com/san_carlos_apache.htm....hope that

    helps...
