    Just some random thoughts:

Kids everywhere are clamoring for this tasty, yet highly nutritious snack

While riding along, not a single house nearby that I could see... I spied this kid, who couldn't have been more than 4 or 5 walking down the road. Carrying what? Firewood on his head? I'm not sure...but I am sure this ain't a scene from my neighborhood.

All these Costa Rican miles are gettin the tires, tired. Everytime I look at this picture, it looks different.

    Día diez...

Sometime in the middle of the night we awaken to the sounds our neighbors arriving. The walls are one layer thick and act more as an amplifier than a sound deadener.:huh If that isn't enough, the ceiling is made up of bamboo which is really just screening the view of the rafters and tin roof which relects sound quite nicely.:lol3

Needless to say, they may as well have been bunking with us. No biggie. Eventually we drift back off to sleep...:snore

What seems to be moments later we awaken again to the sounds of our neighbors leaving.:huh Yes. The same ones.

Apparently, they are in competition with the 'rude Americans' they had read about. Maybe if they fired up a weedwacker in the room they could have been slightly louder.

Again, we drift back to sleep...:snore

But not for long. The internal alarm clock goes off.

First, a run down the hall to inspect the plumbing...

    ...where everything looks hunky dory.

Then, it's search for coffee. Downstairs there's a giant pot brewing. Not quite ready, I wander around a bit seeing what it looks like when water isn't pouring out of the sky...

...the bikes and the BFC are still here...

    ...

    "...interesting flower..."

    "...now, where's that danged coffee?":lol3

    "Ah. There it is!"

The sun is starting to come up over the mountains.

This place is tucked right up into a valley.

The views around here are incredible. You'll have to trust me on this as a cell phone can only take an image so far.

Sipping the coffee down enough to wander without spilling too much, we have a look around some more.

Careful.:deal If the stairs don't get you, the lack of a railing and the hose will. I love this place.:lol3

    Depositing the empty cup inside...

...I see there's some activity out back and decide to have a closer look.

A path leads me through a garden...

...to a building out back that the gardner gestures me into. Walking by the wooden serpent I wonder if this is some of Manuel's work.

Not smaht enough to think to look for his signature, I step in the doorway where I'm greeted by a big booted woman.

Or at least the likeness of one.

They've gathered quite a collection of local artwork...

    ...mostly wood carvings...

    ...but there is other media...

    ...

    ...

    ...

My apologies. The lighting isn't particularly great and the cell phone...

    The work varies in size...

...some table top, some bigger than life...

This looks much better when the earth isn't shaking.

    ...

The intricate detail in the carvings makes your head spin...

    ...

    Oh, look! A chicken!

    Or is that a rooster?

    ...

Quite a range of subject matter...

    ...I guess they all fly...

    Some tools of the trade...

The display goes on for sometime, eventually spitting me out the other end...

Wandering back over to the dining room we check out the interweb. Our maps don't have the detail we need but Google Earth does.

A few crappy shots are taken for reference.

If there's a plan today it will take us from Alaska to Siberia.:evil

Glad to see this RR fired back up again EC....

    Here's a few random pics:

We found that while the mountains were a bit cooler...you could plan on rain almost every day.

You probably noticed a lot of pictures of us with the Policia...when we came into an area where there was a presence, we took the approach that it's better for us to take the lead and engage them first. It worked out perfectly and we never had a problem. This guy posed for a picture, but was the least friendly of all of our encounters with them. Nothing bad though. Generally speaking, they were great, helpful, regular guys that we enjoyed interacting with.

    What pothole???:shark

    There goes the neighborhood....damn gringo's

This was a nice place before we arrived.....

The Pelicano was a great base camp for us.

Indeed it was. On both counts.

    Now, where were we...?

After my tour of the grounds I catch up with Dave and we have breakfast.

Typico - with the exception of the pelican cheese which is a house specialty. Ok. I made that part up. But is it included in the astronomical room price.:deal Can't beat that with a stick.

Over breakfast we review our plan for the day. Not sure if the details originated the night before as we reviewed the events of the previous day over beers on the porch or if it came to us this morning. Or maybe it was at 2:30 in the morning when our neighbors crashed through the walls to leave. Doesn't really matter.

Up until today we've been on a constant move. Get up, pack our crap and roll onto the next place, yet to be determined.

Today we discuss a different plan. A plan whose seeds were planted months ago (years, now:D) with an email to Dave that included a Google Earth link showing Alaska, Costa Rica. After virtually traveling over the terrain I shoot him the link with a simple note, "We gotta go here."

His quick reply, "Right after we go to Siberia."

Sure enough, zooming out, there's a Siberia, too! A plan is hatched.

That, btw, is more or less the extent of our trip planning.

So, over another cafe negra, typico and some fresh pelican cheese we plan the day. "What if we leave our crap here and just spend the day exploring the mountains. The bikes will be nice and light for the trails, we can get back early, hang around, have a nice relaxed dinner and some Bavarias..."

After 10 days on the road this has a certain appeal. Only one thing can kill our plan - do they have a room for the night?

We check with the staff. They do.:clap It's a plan.

After breakfast we head back upstairs, down the hall to our room...

...collect our soggy gear for the day...

...leaving some of it behind to continue to dry.

BTW, when I say the walls were thin I'm not exaggerating.

From the porch you can read through the wall the large print Gideon's Bible that is in each and every room.:deal

After a bit of a slow motion prep we finally get the bikes loaded...

...and head out the steep driveway...

    ...towards adventure...

Following the River Blanco, the open highway takes us further into the valley...

    "Go out ahead...I'll follow you..."

Taking the lead, Whizzerwheel rides ahead into the postcard...

...where I wonder when the last time a wheel has been here.

It's like traveling back in time to the old farm roads of New England which are now rutted, overgrown, unmaintained woods trails.

    Another bridge...

    Artsy tree bark shot...

It's been 14 years since we've been there, but your ride report inspired me to have pintos gallos for dinner tonight. :D

I think we stayed at the same place with the paper thin walls back then. We were in a room over the dining room and a band had set up for some sort of party. After an hour or two of music, I spent 20 minutes with the phrase book figuring out how to ask for a new room, because ours was too noisy.

I made my way to the front desk, and regurgitated the Spanish I'd memorized to the nice young lady there, and she said, "Oh, I'm sorry, let me get you moved right away." :rofl

Thanks for a great trip down memory lane!

Wait a minute.....it is lunchtime isn't it? Aren't you hungry EC?

    Lets have something different....

Sorry for the overexposed plato de pescado

I kinda liked this pic from somewhere near where we just were

That doesn't really make any sense does it?

There is always a seemingly endless presence of school children, either walking to or from school, home or... god knows where. These girls waiting for the bus obliged our lenses.

Don't really know what was going on here, but this was a common sight.

Did I get us off track enough yet EC? :deal
