Not so hard afterall mate!!
Taking delivery of my 800 this week. Lots of things to think about, I've downloaded pictures of Givi, touratech, Hepco Becker, Holan, SW Motech, Adventure Spec. I like the shape of the givis but the Holans seem to have the best coverage. I'm Reading thru the post right now. I'm leaning towards the Holans, But would welcome any insight!
Yeah I did the same thing, compiled pictures of all farkles and all companies that made them to more easily compare what I wanted...
Personally I went for the Holans and I think they're great, but really, almost all bars are good in their own right (except for maybe the BMW oem ones which everyone seems to universally pan). Givis for example stick out a bit farther (but not in an ugly way) which means they don't have to be as high up to protect the plastics and I've also heard they double as good highway pegs when cruising. I also really liked the Hepkos. And Adventure Spec has an awesome bash plate that will only work with their bars, I was only turned off by how far they stick out, but those who have them seem very pleased.
But for myself I give a big thumbs up to Holan. There's a full separate thread about the Holan bars if you do a search for it. The one negative to them is probably having to wait a bit to get them as they sell faster than F800Depot can keep them in stock...
I've got the Givis, and am happy with them, but haven't crash tested them yet. My guess is that, unless you ask a specific question, everyone will just chime in here and tell you that they're happy with whatever it is that they bought. The Holans seem like they'll do the job, but then so do all the others. They all protect different parts of the bike in different ways. It's a personal preference. I got the Givis because I liked their extra width, and the way they didn't interfere with the looks of the bike, unlike (IMhO) the Adv. Spec and SW-Motech bars. But there are plenty here that think that those two look great. So if the Holans float your boat, why then...

+2 on the GIVIS here. We have them on our F658 and F800GS. I like them because they look like they would protect your legs as well as the bike if you hit a car bumper or tree trunk. And they don't look that bad.
I like my SW-Motech; they don't hang out in the breeze like the Givi, they aren't overdone, straining to match, like the Holan. They just blend in nicely and provide good protection. Plus, as a bonus, they have mounts built in for highway pegs. I know you might say the highway pegs don't belong on a dual-sport (you should have seen what they said on Orange Crush) but I'm sure I will be glad to have them on my trip to Alaska this summer. 10,000+ miles.
For those who think they don't need crash bars, here is a pic of my radiator, the lower right mount. I have added the Tourtech "Hard Part", but put the broken part of the tab back on the bike.
I did this playing around on some ice this winter. Dumped the bike on the left side and broke the clutch lever and this tab on the radiator. I wasn't going more than 15 mph.
Tested the Adv-spec bars on ride yesterday - worked beautifully. Only mark on the bike is where the centerstand hit the swingarm. Other than that, all the damage is on the crash bars and bash plate.
C'mon, man! We need details.
Glad you're ok. Did the crash bars bend at all?
How fast were you going? Did it hurt?
Low speed >10 mph - tucked the front wheel in loose stuff - too much front brake - still getting used to using the rear brake. Crashbars look unbent - not a scratch on me. First time riding dirt in 20 years - had the kind of day that made me wonder why I waited so long. Unfortunately I did not bring a camera.
which skid plate is that?
just bought a F800GS and am completely stoked!
so i'm looking for crash bars and a skid plate. i want the best protection possible for gravel riding. i want to protect the pipes, oil cooler and filter, etc.
the BMW skid plate is really expensive. over $450 here in japan. i'd like to find something for 2ish. there are some cheaper skid plates out there but they dont have vent holes in the front. probably a silly question but how important is that?

i also need crash bars and am leaning towart the givis for appearance and their usabilitiy as hiway pegs if these would be compatible with either of the above skid plates? however, the best crash protection is my priority. what is the verdict on the givis?

I chose the BMW skid plate because it protects the oil filter and cooler, and it extends back and protects the catalitic converter. Most are too short.
I chose the SW-motech crash bars because they provide good coverage. Plus, they have highway peg mounts built in. F800Depot sell pegs that bolt right on. Those pegs are also the only all black pegs I've seen that are decent quality.
Anybody know what crash bars this guy on the vid has ?
I'd guess at hand made. There doesn't seem to be anything joining them together so not sure how robust they'll be if needed. More scratch bars than crash bars.
I just bolted on the Adventure Spec crash bars ,bash plate and rear luggage rack.I'm no wrencher but they all went on perfectly with no tugging to line up holes and am hoping they do their job
