I went for a quick weekend camping/riding trip so I could ride around and explore more of Crested Butte.

I actually camped in Taylor. There are plenty of great camping areas right near the river. No facilities, but the price is right. FREE

On Saturday morning, I got up and rode over Trail Creek and Spring Creek to get down the highway and end up in Crested Butte. Easy graded roads. Pretty, but not very exciting.

I really wanted to ride up to Paradise Divide and make the loop with Schofield Pass back to CB (NOT going over to Marble and trying the Devil's Punchbowl, at least not this trip).

That road is pretty easy as well. Nothing technical. A little steep and the narrow edges are enough to keep you from being bored. The highlight is the view, especially in August. Wildflowers everywhere.

After having a little lunch in the Ginger Cafe back in CB, I decided to try and get back to camp by going over Cement Creek, and back down Italian Creek. I had tried to go the opposite way back in June, but was still stopped by snow.

It was a little muddy, but not too bad.

We are headed your way in a week!!!! Ready to get out of this oppressive heat here in Texas!!! We have a group of about 15 riders staying in Ouray and riding the passes around there, some of the group did mention a two day loop that includes Gunnison and beyond. How is the snow on the passes? We were there last year over the July 4th weekend and there was snow everywhere, lucked out and only one pass, Black Bear, was closed, decided we would go as late in the season as possible this year! Thanks for the ride report!!! And those are great pictures from a phone!!!!!

Wish I could. I need to get back there again. Next time I will take the detour and head up American Flag Mountain. This time, all I did was get back to camp. Left and came back to Denver the next morning via 285. Unfortunately, it rained all night so I had to pack up wet.

That will be a lot of fun. Not much snow on the passes this time of year. Of course, it will start falling again in a few weeks, so you should sneek it in. Too much fun stuff to ride. Definitely check out the Rockies section for even more ideas.

Caught this post simply because it had Crested Butte in the title....lived there back in '92....worked at the Market Place as a ski-bum...did the Flat Tire Bike week thing....peddled more then motorcycled back then, really miss that place, skiing was great...memories of Schofield Pass, the Wooden Nickle, poverty gulch and Gunnison are faint but linger...wow, blast from the past...

Your timing is impeccable. I'm headed over there for a 3 day ride Aug. 27-29. Planning to ride up Gothic Rd. to Schofield Pass and down Slate River Rd. to Washington Gulch. Reading your trip report and seeing the photos makes me even more excited about the trip.

    Thanks for the great report!
