CRF450X as an adventure bike

    Bare with me on this one, I have been known to mod the bejesus out of things...

    I have a XR628 modded to buggery. Looky:

    I am getting a 450x for my ADV duties which involve mondo hwy miles mixed with high country rocky riding.

    My thinking is:

    2009 450X
    some form of big bire kit - 520cc ice cube or falicon racing
    acerbis 20liter tank
    R up the motor - cam, R mode; FCR carb, etc
    insatll AS valves and apparently the TRX 3 ring piston?
    aftermarket radiator oil cooler kit.
    remove electric start and battery crap (I like kick start)
    install XR600 electrical system (dual circuit DC & AC)
    boost stator to 200watts
    purchase Baja designs HID lights x 2
    Mckenzie motorsorts weld on baja light bar
    grip heaters
    protapers
    BRP submount
    d606 f&r

    What comments if any do you guys have on this?

    Im really looking for a bike between the 650R and the 450X. Slowly the motor down a little is cool with me as I dont need lots of revs

    What you need AC for if you're sunning HID's?

    In that configuration it will at least feel more powerful than a xr650r, so R cam might be a bit overkill?

    The stick XR600 loom comes with dual circuitry.

    Do you really think the config would make it more powerful than the XR650R?

    Any reason why you would choose the CRF over an EXC?

    You really can't beat the wide ratio 6 speed on a ADV / dual sport bike.

    It's a Honda.

    As much as you're right with the gearbox thing, you cant beat Honda reliability imo.

    The CRF engine architecture is a brilliant design. I intend (as I did with my XR) to make the bike Honda should be making. If that means spending mondo money then so be it. At least it will be unique.

    I like customising. If that extends to making a wider radtio gearbox then so be it.

    The baja guys get the crf spinning at 150kh/hr.

    120km/hr is fine for me.

    I did look at the KTM 654-90. Too much money for too little bike imo. I still like kick start even though I added e start to my xr.

    Not sure what models you mean with KTM 654-90, but if you want a CRF weight/size equivalent you should be looking at the 450/525/530 EXCs. Just look around on the forum what the guys are using, there is a reason why they are by far the most popular high performance DS/Adv bikes. If you stick with a 2003-2007 model (RFS engine series), reliability is not an issue even compared to the Honda.

    I like customizing too and don't give a fuck about brand names, but IMO the KTM will simply end up being the better bike for this application.

    Top speed is never the issue. All you have to do is gear it up but then your gear spread and 1st gear goes to crap.

    Yes you can beat Honda reliability. The RFS does as well as the WRs.

    He means the 690 (actually 654cc ) Come on lukas you should know that ,

    I think the crf would make a pretty good adv- rally bike but as you say $$$$$ my list of goodies ( not in any order

    1) valves KW
    2) oil cooler
    3) custom gear box and incresed oil gallerys
    4) HM rally kit
    5) cush drive rear hub

    You are right, I do know that and should have caught it. Haven't had my coffee yet! :deal


    Who makes the wide ratio gearbox for the CRF, is it OEM or aftermarket? If somebody made one for the 690 I would probably sell 3 or 4 of my bikes and get one.

    I have cross refferanced the part number from the 690r and the RR which are different but can'r seem to find the ratios between the two ?????
    my brother is a fitter who works for a company that makes Gears they just finshed a gear box for a baja unlimited twin turbo V8 jimco buggie awesome beast ofa machine ,they also made custom one off's for vintage bike were part are no longer made ,

    Back to the CRF I do belive there isa company that does make a gear box for the CRF

    I think the RR has the same gearbox as all the other 690s, at least it definitely feels too narrow while riding. Great for racing, supermoto, etc, but not good if you want to cruise on the tarmac to get to your trails.

    Do you have a rough idea how much it would cost to make a custom overdrive 6th gear (driven and drive) for a motorcycle?

    I was looking at the 530 - it looks on paper to be one hell of a bike. I've been steered away for several reasons:

    1. Im a Honda man.
    2. The issues with the 08-10 engines eating their own oil scares the bejesus out of me. The CRF I can oil up with a litre each side.
    3. Weird handling.

    There are a lot of pros to the 530. But the CRf450 engine I believe can be made better - it revs better and has a snap that cant be beat.

    FWIW I run a heaviliy modified 450R. Stock engine it eats KTM450 excs. That's with the heaviest FWW and big tank etc (stock engine meaning no exhaust or anythng.) It runs HARD.

    The 450X I expect to make will run between a 450R and 650R. The alloy frame is sensational.

    All this talk about the CRF gearbox - how narrow is it?

    So the plan is to add weigh to the CRF and take weight off it - remove estart and battery and all that crap.

    If I have to then I will make a wide speed gearbox - not that hard really.

    Yeap agree with that list mudguts. Heaps of oil does the trick and comparing my heavilty modded XR to the CRF shows how far engine design and efficiency has come - the 450R wallops the 628 easily.

    Not sure if I would go rallye screen - looking more at this puppies:

    I should finish my bloody bike just have to do a bit of welding ( head stem )
    and make a Nav tower , I had an bit of an expirement by taking out the DB killer from the muffler it made a bit difference but loud , So I'm loking into the full akro system with air box cover & vortex ECU ( when ready )

    Yeah - plus the CRF450X is closer to what I want. Revs a bit more than the XR628 I have. Has better parts standard. Is newer. More options. Much lighter.

    Great report, and very usefull !!
    I am in the process of getting a crf x, with which I am planning to do trail riding and pretty long off road trips here in Paraguay.
    I currently own a XR 650 R, great for open trail riding and every day use, but a little too heavy to follow my friends in tight trails.
    I already made this question, but I had very few responses: Having the crf x, should I keep the 650 r for relatively long trips and day use? Or, should I cange it for a KLR 650? I am just afraid that there will be a gap of roads and trips that I can not cover with the crf and klr. But, on the other hand, running through the Gran Chaco (a region similar to the outback in Australia), for 1500 km in 2 to 3 days, the XR is not very confortable.
